Windows 10: Windows Taskbar Icon Issue/Bug Icons Corrupted/Random/Pixels/Black Box When Using External...

The icons on my Windows 11 taskbar have become 'Corrupted' and some are just a few random pixels, others are black boxes or icons for other apps or upside down. The issue only occurs when using an external monitor not laptop screen and only affects the taskbar icons - the icons are right elsewhere.Does anyone know how to fix? I've tried Re-Installing graphics drivers, clearing icon cache, restarting windows file explorer and SFC/scannow. No avail!Please can Microsoft fix this bug!Image of issue:

NIGHTMARE icon in windows taskbar

Ok ... this is really an annoying thingy in Windows Vista that till today. My top wish list is to solve this !!! *Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:*Bang Head :banghead:

See attached pic ... for eg. open My Computer ... icon is of course as shown - the My Computer default Vista icon ... after you browse? *swoosh* kind of black magic ... it changes to that icon with the green arrow ... browsing back to My Computer it remains like that ... with the green arrow!!!

This happens to any and all folders ! ... When you load it ... it comes up with the default folder ... after exporing through folder it changes ... and remains like that.

For info : have tried a fresh installation of Vista to make sure that no bug got in. So must be some DAMN Vista settings

black icons

So i recently looked into how to remove those shortcut arrows and stumbled upon this registry edit:

REG ADD “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons” /v 29 /d %SystemRoot%\System32\shell32.dll,50 /f


after applying this and restarting the computer, my windows 7 now has black icons. Its not black boxes over the icons, its straight up the icon is black. when i refresh, i can see for a milisecond the real icon. Anyone know how to fix this besides a system restore? (i don't have any restore points *Bang Head :banghead

Edit and I also went into the registry and went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer, and clicked on "link" and edited the value for it to 0000 00 00 00 00

not sure if that also contributed to this problem.

 

Remove shortcut arrow icons (corrupts to black square)

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. Adding a new account initially seemed to work but after a few reboots it corrupted again. If I find the time I might try creating a new dll with the icon file in it, although I doubt that will help since the default dll also has a transparent icon that kept corrupting. Such a weird bug, no? It works about 25% of the time, and none of the other icons revert to a black square. I could also try making an "icon" that has one colored pixel in it, maybe it's something with how windows reads fully transparent icons, although I would expect it to get the black square always then. I'll update if I find a solution that works.

Huzzah! Victory! At least for now. Adding 1 black pixel to the .ico file seems to have worked, 4 reboots so far and no ugly black squares. I can see the pixel if I look close but I think this is a solution I can live with. The file is here if anyone wants it.nearlyblank.ico
