Windows 10: Windows Print Spooler Won't Stay Running - FortiClient

Hi All,We are currently having an issue with the windows print spooler which we can't get our heads around. It is affecting both Windows 10 and 11 machines.The print spooler keeps crashing and won't stay running for long, we believe that this is due to us installing FortiClient Antivirus on our machines. We raised the issue with FortiNet and they say that the issue is not caused by there software, it is because the print spooler is trying to access a file which is protected by FortiClient C:\\Program Files\\Fortinet\\FortiClient\\vir_sig\\vir_rtp.My question is, can anyone think of any reaso

Please try steps check if it helps.

• Press Windows + R, type services.mscand press
  Enter.
• Find Print Spooler service and double-click.
• Make sure Print Spooler's
  Startup type set to Automatic.
• The Service status of the Print Spooler should be
  Running.
• If not, can you "Start" the Print Spooler service.
  

If issue persists try to remove spooled print job that could causing this problem.

1. Go to location c:\<windows directory>\system32\spool\printers

2. Delete files with extensions of ".spl" or ".shd" from the Spool location while the Print Spooler is stopped.

Tried this. Print spooler will not start.

Go to location

c:\<windows directory>\system32\spool\printersDelete files with extensions of ".spl" or ".shd" from the Spool location while the Print Spooler is stopped.
There are no .spl or .shd files in the list.

Looking at the number of posts this seems to be a common problem. Surely Microsoft should fix it as a matter of urgency as the most common solution seems to be reverting to Windows 7 or 8.

 

Windows 10 print spooler will not stay running

I upgraded from windows 7 professional to windows 10 and none of my printers will work after upgrade. It will not allow me to install, uninstall, or reinstall the printers. It says print spooler not running. I restarted with a clean boot and the spooler
still will not stay running? It is very frustrating....
