Windows 10: Windows Photo Viewer Changes RAW Photos

Let me say to begin, I am no expert, I just try to resolve issues on my system and share the solution if possible.I have searched all through several forums to find the solution to this annoying trait of Windows Photo Viewer. It changes the brightness of RAW images and auto rotates Portrait images to landscape.Many solutions posted by experts seem to accept its an issue we have to live with. After much searching I did find one user who was a Nikon camera user who claimed that by downloading the Nikon CODECS into the Windows 11 PC it fixed these issues. I thought I would try that for my Canon S

I have downloaded this, and it did not work; photo viewer is not in the list of programs in Open With or Default App. I used option 2 step 3, followed by step 5 to 9.

OK I got this fully working.

To view only .jpg files in folder containing jpg and camera raw

1. In File Explorer, navigate to folder containing photos that you wish to view.
2. In File Explorer, type *.jpg in the search box. You will then see all your jpeg's with the camera raw files absent.
3. Click on any file in the search results, to start Photo Viewer.

To view only camera raw (.cr2) files in a folder containing jpg and camera raw

1. In File Explorer, navigate to folder containing photos that you wish to view.
2. In File Explorer, type *.cr2 in the search box. You will then see all your camera raw files with the jpeg files absent.
3. Click on any file in the search results, to start Photo Viewer.

It really is that simple. No registry edits needed. *chuckle

 

RAW Photos in Photos App

Hi Apeman_3663, I am Paulo and I'd like to help.

Unfortunately, the option to disable the auto-enhance in Photos was removed. I understand the sentiments as this has been a problem even in Windows 10 and there is still an active thread on this.

A workaround suggested by other users in the thread was to restore the old Windows Photo Viewer and set it as your default for raw images.

If Windows Photo Viewer doesn't work and didn't remove any enhancements on your images, another way is to use a third-party app viewer as other users did in the thread. Here's where you can check some
