  1. Windows 11: When I change a file name on the desktop, the icon moves

FOCUS: This problem happens when a file on the desktop is renamed. File should be in an empty right-most portion of the desktop. It is unrelated to the settings for aligining icons or auto-arrange. Steps to repro.1. Put a file icon in the righthand side of the desktop. There should be empty space to the left of the icon.2. Select the file icon and press F2rename. Type a new name and press return.OBSERVE: The icon moves to the leftmost portion of the screen, in the first available space.EXPECT: Windows should leave the position of the file icon unchanged.Notes: There are several instances

Windows 11: When I change a file name on the desktop, the icon moves

I'm running Windows 11, all updates have been installed, version is Windows 11 Pro 22H2, build 22621.1105

When I rename a file that is on the desktop, the icon for the file immediately moves to the lefthand side of the desktop, the first available space from the top. This is a new behavior that I have only experienced since installing Windows 11 [in other words, on this same computer, when it was running Windows 10, the icon for a renamed file stayed put - it didn't move].

The icons on my desktop are arranged in clumps, and the clumps stay where they are. It's only when I rename a file [any file] that the icon for that file moves.

I found this post relating the same question but for Windows 10:

    Redirecting

I found the checkbox referred to in the post and rebooted, but that had no apparent effect [and I'm not sure that solution actually fit the issue, but it was worth a try anyway].

Thoughts or suggestions on how to get icons on the desktop to stay put?

  3. Windows 11: When I change a file name on the desktop, the icon moves

FOCUS: This problem happens when a file on the desktop is renamed. File should be in an empty right-most portion of the desktop. It is unrelated to the settings for aligining icons or auto-arrange.

    Steps to repro.

    1. Put a file icon in the righthand side of the desktop. There should be empty space to the left of the icon.

    2. Select the file icon and press F2(rename). Type a new name and press return.

OBSERVE: The icon moves to the leftmost portion of the screen, in the first available space.

EXPECT: Windows should leave the position of the file icon unchanged.

Notes: There are several instances of this being reported and commented upon by "experts" who obviously didn't try to repro the bug, and then those reports were locked so that no additional comments could be made.

This is a bug. Windows team should recognize it and fix it. I can only assume that people who use Windows 11 don't use it for serious work. This is new behavior, not seen in Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, Vsta, 7, 8, or 10.

Windows 11: When I change a file name on the desktop, the icon moves

    Hi Cindy,

Thank you for digging around and finding that link for me. I ran an instance of PowerShell as Administrator and completed all the steps. My computer is now cleaner and healthier after all the scans and checks Windows 11: When I change a file name on the desktop, the icon moves :)

However, icons on my desktop are still moving when I rename the file.

I do appreciate all the tips and suggestions - please keep 'em coming!
