  2. Problem with volume control in Windows 11

    Dear MasonNZ,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community

    Thank you for providing detailed information about the volume control issue you're experiencing with your Behringer UMC404HD sound card after a recent Windows update. It's clear you've already undertaken several troubleshooting steps to address the problem without success.

    Based on your description, it appears that the issue is specifically related to how Windows 11 is handling volume control with your sound card, possibly due to changes introduced in recent updates. Since you've already tried clean reinstallation of Windows 11, reinstalling sound card drivers, and utilizing the Windows troubleshooter, additional troubleshooting steps may be necessary.

    Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the issue:

    Check the Windows Update History for any specific updates that appear alongside the volume control issue. If possible, consider uninstalling these updates to see if they temporarily fix the problem until a permanent solution can be found. You can try uninstalling updates one by one to see if the problem goes away after uninstalling a particular update. Once you find any update that affects the volume control, you can work around it by hiding the update.

    The method for hiding a specific update is as follows:

    • Download the Tool: First, you need to download the “Show or Hide Updates” tool. You can find it on the official Microsoft website.
    • Run the Tool: Once downloaded, double-click on the file to run it. This tool is a portable application, so you don’t need to install it.
    • Choose the Option: In the main window, click the “Next” button to continue. Since you want to hide the updates, click on the “Hide Updates” option.
    • Select the Updates: The application will now scan your system and list all the available updates. Select the checkbox next to the update you want to hide and click on the “Next” button.
    • Hide the Updates: The application will now hide the selected update automatically. Once hidden, you will see the “fixed” message on the next screen. Click on the “Close” button, and you are done.
    If the above step didn't resolve the issue, it may be necessary to wait for further updates from Microsoft or Behringer that specifically address compatibility or functionality issues with Windows 11. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out for assistance.

    Windows 11 volume control problems with Tidal.

    Problem with volume control in Windows 11

    System information

    Windows 11 Pro

    Version 23H2

    Installed on ‎18/‎05/‎2024

    OS build 22631.3672

    Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22700.1009.0

    Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1270 V2 @ 3.50GHz 3.50 GHz

    Installed RAM 16,0 GB

    The problem

    I am using an external sound card Behringer UMC404HD.

    After a /recent/ Windows update, I encountered the following problem: the main system volume slider does not noticeably change the volume throughout the range from 100% to 1%. At 0%, the volume disappears completely.

    Before this update (I can't pinpoint which update exactly), there was no such issue, and the slider worked fine.

    It's definitely not due to the sound card driver update, as I tried installing various versions of the sound card drivers from developre's site, and the error is always the same. I also tried completely reinstalling the system; with a clean installation, this error does not occur, but It appears after some time when the system downloads updates.

    The same sound card, connected to another computer with Windows 10, does not show this error. Moreover, the same sound card on this same computer with Windows 10 also does not show this error, even after receiving all necessary system updates.

    A search for similar errors on the Behringer support site yielded no results.

    However, I observed the following.

    After rolling back the Behringer drivers to an older version, the driver settings interface displays volume controls for the device that duplicate the system controls (these duplicating controls were removed in newer driver versions). If you move the system volume slider from 100% to 1% and watch these controls in the driver, you can see that they only lower to -70dB.

    This visually demonstrates that the system volume control seems to limit the volume to -70dB instead of -120dB, as required by the driver.

    After this, if you lower the system slider to 0, the level control in the driver also drops sharply to 0. If you manually move the control in the driver's interface, the volume smoothly changes from 100% to 0%, as it should, meaning the issue is with the Windows volume control. Separate volume control in the application mixer works as expected.

    Solutions tried so far without success

    Clean reinstallation of Windows 11;

    Reinstallation of the sound card drivers, following the procedure established by the manufacturer's website, rebooting the system after each step;

    Using the Windows troubleshooter;

    Connecting the sound card to different USB ports on the motherboard.
