    Windows 11 Network Sharing Problem

I'm setting up a home network on 2 new Windows 11 PCs. I want to share my Mp3 folder which is under Local Disk/Users/MyName/Music/Mp3. When I select this folder to share, what ends up as the network share is the entire Users folder. Not at all what I want. Why is this happening and what should I do to limit the sharing to the Mp3 folder? I've set up a Private Network. ThanksBTW, I tried contacting MS support for this and was disconnected 3 times at the MS end and now I am banned for 24 hours. Pretty frustrating.

    :)

  2. Sharing problems on home wifi network with Windows 11.

    Hello Thomas Tonon,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you're experiencing difficulties setting up file sharing between your old computer running Windows 10 and your new computer running Windows 11 over your home Wi-Fi network.

I'll try to help you troubleshoot the issue and find a resolution.

First, let's ensure that both computers are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and can access the internet (set both to Private network). This will confirm that the network connectivity is not the cause of the problem.

    • Private network. Use this for networks you trust, such as a network at home or work. When a network is set to private, your PC is discoverable to other devices on the network, and you can use your PC for file and printer sharing.
    • Public network. Use this for networks you connect to when you’re out and about, such as a Wi-Fi network at a coffee shop. Your PC will be hidden from other devices on the network, and you can’t use your PC for file and printer sharing.

To change a Wi-Fi network to public or private
      • Windows 10
        1. On the right side of the taskbar, select the Wi-Fi network icon.
        2. Under the name of the Wi-Fi network that you’re connected to, select Properties.
        3. Under Network profile, select Public or Private.
      • Windows 11
        1. Select Start , then type settings. Select Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
        2. On the Wi-Fi settings screen, select Manage known networks, and select the network you're connected to.
        3. On the Wi-Fi network screen, under Network profile type, select Public (Recommended) or Private.
Next, we'll focus on the file sharing settings on both computers. Here are the steps to follow:

On the Old Computer (Windows 10):

    1. Open File Explorer and navigate to the folder or files you want to share.
    2. Right-click on the folder or file and select "Properties" from the context menu.
    3. In the Properties window, go to the "Sharing" tab.
    4. Click on the "Share" button and select the user account, this account is the user account that exists with the current computer and will need to be used for authentication in Windows 11 later.
    5. Set the appropriate permissions (read, write, etc.) and click "Share" or "OK" to save the changes.
    6. Take note of the computer name or IP address of the Windows 10 machine.
On the New Computer (Windows 11):

    1. Open File Explorer and click on the "Network" tab in the left sidebar.
    2. Locate the icon representing your old computer and double-click on it.
    3. If prompted, enter the username and password of an account on the Windows 10 machine that has sharing permissions.
    4. If the access is still denied, click on the "Advanced" button and then the "Find Now" button to search for available users.
    5. Select the desired user, click "OK," and try accessing the shared folders or files again.
If you're still unable to access the old computer after following these steps, we can try a few additional troubleshooting measures:

    1. Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software on both computers to see if they might be blocking the file sharing.

If you have any concerns, please contact the service provider of third-party software to get help.
    2. Restart both computers and try accessing the shared folders or files again.
    3. If possible, connect both computers using an Ethernet cable to rule out any Wi-Fi-related issues.
If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
