Windows 10 won't update, tried all online suggestions I could find

    Hello everyone,
I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Trouble is I am now stuck with earliest version of Windows 10 and cannot update to ANY newer version in order to fix numerous Windows 10 problems I am encountering - most importantly automatic refresh doesn't work anywhere in file explorer or desktop (if files or folders are deleted, moved, renamed... nothing happens in explorer or desktop unless I refresh manually).

Neither automatic nor manual Windows 10 update works... under Settings/Windows update... I get 'checking for updates' loop that goes on for hours without any result. I downloaded latest update file from Microsoft site but that too doesn't work - I get 'Checking device compatibility, Please wait, this will just take a moment'... this too goes forever and update process itself never starts.

I have tried pretty much all suggestions I could find online - including:
    1. Stopping and restarting Windows update service, both in cmd and services
    2. Deleting everything in SoftwareDistribution folder in Safe Mode
    3. Executing scripts via .bat file
    4. Manual reboots, system restore...
    5. Windows 10 update troubleshooter

None of these worked for me, so please if You have any other suggesting, I need a proper solution.

    :)

  2. Does or doesn't Windows 10 support A2DP, and if so how is it set up?

I have a Dell XPS 2720 running Windows 10 latest version, all drivers updated.

My Sony MDR-ZX770BN will pair with my PC but it won't connect. When I click the headset in the Connect buttion, it tells me "Couldn't connect". And it does not appear in the list of sound devices.

The headset works ok with my iPhone and iPad.

Been through the unpairing, pairing, unpairing, pairing, a couple of dozen times.

Tried all of the suggestions I could find online.

Seems Windows 10 does not support A2DP?

    It's a verified Microsoft account.

    That's checked for both accounts.

I've already listed that I've tried those.

Hi, first, please try manually downloading the appropriate iso, and use that, rather than trying to let the download happen and the upgrade proceed using that (an esd file). This separates download and Windows update issues from the upgrade process.

Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums

Run chkdsk c: /F from an elevated command prompt just to be safe.
Make sure you disable or preferably uninstall any AV (sometimes this causes issues).
Uninstall Aeroglass (a program), if you have that installed.
    Disconnect any extraneous external devices.
Make sure you have sufficient free space on the target disk.

** I realise I don't know and can't immediately find out if you need to have all updates applied prior to the upgrade.

Do the upgrade without checking for any further updates if you should be offered that option (you shouldn't be).

Thank You, but would reinstall from Windows 10 ISO be any different than going via Settings/Update&Security/Recovery/RESET THIS PC ?

I have numerous Windows 7 programs which would be lost if go ahead with reinstall of Windows 10 itself, so this is why I'm reluctant, and even my previous upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 didn't go without issues, it took too long and with numerous freezes I barely got out of it. Is there is ANY easier fix that would only address Updating issue ?

  6. Check this bat, I have collected some commands, if you have not tried some of them, give it a go.
But from what you have described, I am afraid, that the reinstall/reset is the only way to fix this.

No need to worry. Upgrading using the ISO is an upgrade - the result is the same as waiting for Windows Update. It is absolutely not the same as RESET THIS PC or reinstalling.

You download the ISO (as mentioned above), mount it (by double clicking on it) and then double click on setup.exe and follow the prompts. This will upgrade you to the latest version and you will keep all your programs and documents. It is in effect the same procedure as upgrading from 7 to 10 but slightly less hassle as mounting the ISO is easier.

You are not re-installing - you are doing an upgrade. I did this on one of my PCs yesterday as it wouldn't pick up the upgrade through Windows update and it worked fine.

See this tutorial for more details Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums

    Good luck *Smile

Thank you, I could give that bat a try. I've tried several other bats already but this one seems more comprehensive, hence it might work out better.

If bat doesn't work, I will most likely give ISO a try then... via USB if possible and hope for the best. It sounds good then if its not reinstall, I thought its much more complicated.
    Thank You !!

Hi Paddy, I can tell you the upgrade (repair install/install in place) is the best method. I used it for 3 of my 4 PCs and it worked flawlessly when other methods did not. Most of the issues I have seen with AU installs on the forum over the last few days would be solved if people used the ISO to do this as lx07 describes.

None of my computers can create a recovery disc, an iso allows for repair/reinstall if there are problems in the future, I used option #1 from here https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/9...-download.html This one has the sources\install.wim and can be used for DISM.

IMO even if everything goes fine from WU, it's still a good idea to have a working iso on hand just in case you need it.

Create a bootable USB from the iso you downloaded with Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way Use an 8G USB, the iso is a little larger than 4G.

Ok, so I have chosen & downloaded the following file from Microsoft:

    Win10_1607_English_x64
    size: 4.07GB

Its ISO, I've chosen plain Windows10 (there were other options like N, Single etc.), English language and x64 - because it matches my current one according to system description. I can now go ahead with what lx07 said, theres no need for USB then right ? And as for individual steps I should go as described in Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation - Windows 10 Forums ?

No, there is no need for a USB iso to upgrade, it's more for "just in case" to fill the role of a recovery disc for a repair/reinstall of your present installation if it's ever needed, or if you want to perform a clean install at some point in the future.

Follow what Ix07 posted and the instructions in the link https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...tallation.html Sounds like you're at step 5c in the tutorial.

Windows 10 won't update, tried all online suggestions I could find

    I cannot start the setup.exe from ISO : (
I have first tried mounting ISO, using MagicISO with right click... it won't mount !
Then I have tried the other way - so I extracted all the ISO files to desktop folder... but once all the files are extracted - whenever I click on setup.exe be it via simple left click or via 'run as administrator', the setup.exe remains unresponsive and nothing happens, upgrade won't start ! This seems to be another bug in Windows 10, some files and programs open smoothly and run faster than before while others like this one won't open at all.

Any ideas ? Thanks in advance !!

  14. You can mount ISO by right clicking on it and selecting open with Windows Explorer.

That worked for mounting but setup.exe remains unresponsive and upgrade still won't start, again I tried with left click, right click 'Run as administrator', I opened & closed Windows Explorer but nothing helps.
