    Windows 10 Defragmentation won't Defrag 47% Fragmented

I have a Lenovo Laptop with windows 10, I noticed file transferring from drive to drive was a bit slow so I checked windows defragmentation app and it said my HDD is 47% Fragmented even though its supposed to run automatically weekly, I ran the optimization option which ran for like a day and a half something around 15 passes, then when I checked it after it still says 47% Fragmented .. I ran it again a couple of times it runs for a while then says the same thing ..... I ran chkdsk and sfc / scannow and found no errors

  2. How to perform Defragmentation in Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Communities.

I will be glad to help you with the issue you have with the computer. I understand the frustration when things don't work the way it should.

Fragmentation makes your hard disk do extra work that can slow down your computer. Removable storage devices such as USB flash drives can also become fragmented. Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your disks and drives can work more efficiently.
Disk Defragmenter runs on a schedule, but you can also analyze and defragment your disks and drives manually. To do this, follow these steps:

    To defragment your hard disk

    • Open Disk Defragmenter by clicking the Start. In the search box, type
Disk Defragmenter, and then, in the list of results, click Disk Defragmenter.

    • Under Current status, select the disk you want to defragment.

    • To determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not, click Analyze disk.

Windows 10 Defragmentation won't Defrag 47% Fragmented [IMG]
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Once Windows is finished analyzing the disk, you can check the percentage of fragmentation on the disk in the
Last Run column. If the number is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.

    • Click Defragment disk.

If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
      confirmation.

Disk Defragmenter might take from several minutes to a few hours to finish, depending on the size and degree of fragmentation of your hard disk. You can still use your computer during the defragmentation process.

    Notes

    • If the disk is already in exclusive use by another program or is formatted using a file system other than NTFS file system, FAT, or FAT32, it can't be defragmented.

    • Network locations can't be defragmented.

    • If a disk that you're expecting to see under Current status is not showing up there, it might be because it contains an error. Try to repair the disk first, then return to Disk Defragmenter to try again. See

      Check a drive for errors
      for more information.

Hope this information is helpful. Please post in case you have any further issues, we are happy to help you further.

    Than you.

  3. disk defragmentation

    Hi,

    To defragment your hard disk:

    1. Click the Start button. In the search box, type Disk Defragmenter, and then in the list of results, click Disk Defragmenter.

    2. Select the disk you want to defragment.

    3. Click Analyze disk to determine if the disk needs to be defragmented or not.

    4. If fragmentation is above 10%, you should defragment the disk.

    5. Click Defragment disk, in order to defragment the disk.

(The above method is based on Disk Defragmenter tool for Windows 8)

  4. Windows 10 Defragmentation won't Defrag 47% Fragmented

Boot and/or offline defragmentation in Windows 10

After upgrading my Dell Inspiron 580 desktop PC to Windows 10, I noticed that my system had 4 fragmented system files: the 8.00GB pagefile.sys has 44 fragments; the 5.90GB hiberfil.sys has 6 fragments; the 1.00 MB thumbcache_32.db and the 1.00 MB iconcache_32.db
both have 2 fragments. If I have understood correctly, the OS would work better if these system files were not fragmented.
I have Auslogics (a certified Microsoft Gold Application Developer) Disk Defrag Pro that I use to defrag the other files on my PC.
This program has an Offline Defragmentation option to defrag system files during a boot.
I tried to use the Offline Defragmentation tool but for some reason it did not defragment the system files (?). I'm sure I have done this at least once before with the previous OS (Windows 7 Home Premium).
I have looked at the Microsoft defragmentation tool - dfrgui.exe – but this does not appear to have a boot defrag option.
I would welcome some advice from an expert. My 917GB HD is 80% free so space is not an issue.
