I knew that number hit some memory for me.. at least.
    Let's do some math(s)
    Start with 8 bits..
    8 * 2 = 16
    16 * 2 = 32
    32 * 2 = 64
    64 * 2 = 128
    128 * 2 = 256
    Finally
    256 * 2 = 512 bits

And 512 bits = number of apps allowed on start menu.. could be this reason.

Windows 10 Can't Display More than 512 Apps in the Start Menu

    Somebody called for me ?
Happened few times when I had 200+ programs installed and was REALLY hard to find anything in W7 Start menu, made dozen folders on desktop to keep them sorted by thematic. Otherwise, somewhere close to 100 is the norm on my main system. I love small specialized programs and loath those do it all but clean toilets applications of which I can use 10% of their capabilities. (wish they did clean toilets though).

Installed programs that are shown on the start bar are called "apps" now. So probably more people than you think, when almost every steam game can be added to that list.

  7. Except that you have to specify adding the game to the start on install, otherwise they're only accessible through the steam app library. Using windows search I can't see any of the (currently) 4 steam games installed on my pc.

I can already see whole basement filled up with unopened App boxes (any collectables are worth more like that).

I'm not sure it's 512 apps, I'm pretty sure it's 512 items in the start menu. I don't have that many apps installed and this bug is affecting me big time. Keep in mind that on a blank windows install, there are already around 100 items in the start menu (maybe more), including dozens of items under windows accessories, administrative tools, ease of access, system tools, etc., not to mention the metro apps. Most third party programs that are installed add more than one item to the start menu, including manual, "read me" file, uninstall link, etc. I do audio editing and use a lot of plugins, and each one takes up an "app slot" in the start menu.

    Hi there

If this really is a restriction why not create a Custom Toolbar and just have your Video editing apps on it.
Easy to do --same method as has been available from at least W7 onwards if not earlier.

For details I posted a thread about this in the W8 Forum some time ago - just search for it. You can also add Metro apps to the custom toolbar if you want. -- No registry hacks or 3rd party stuff required - just bog standard Windows.

You can also save these entries in a file so if you re-install Windows you don't have to re-create the toolbar again from scratch. Menu fully flexible and cascadable.

    Cheers

How many apps can earlier versions of Windows accommodate? I have enough trouble with about 100 internet favourites, and they are in alphabetical order,

As far as I know it has been unlimited in previous Windows versions. This is bug/oversight unique to Win 10 that Microsoft has announced it is working on fixing. There should be an update addressing the problem hopefully soon.

For now, we can stick to third party start menus like Start10, Startisback, etc., which don't have this problem.
