Windows 10: Windows 10 black screen with cursor, Task Manager access but no Windows key - before and...

Very strange problem with a W10 PC. After boot and succesful pin code MS account login we get a black screen but with the mouse cursor visible only. There is no task bar and the windows key produces nothing on screen. CTR ALT DEL brings up a Task Manager window from which we can access the device manager via a new task: devmgmt.msc. THought it was a graphics driver issue so did a complete uninstall via the device manager but that did not work. Tried Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B and that did not work. Went down the 1st nuclear option path and accessed the ASO menu to initiate a comple

Sounds like the old... windows black screen of death.

Google search and you will find a lot of the "Windows Black Screen of Death with cursor" fixes.

 

Black Screen on Windows 10, Can't access Task Manager

Hello,

I recently have run into the black screen of death on Windows 10. I have the cursor that moves around, but nothing else pops up on the screen. I have been looking around to find out what I can do to fix this and have seen that if I can access task manager
I can fix the problem. Unfortunately Task Manager won't pop up. I know my keyboard works, because the Windows P key brings up the Project Connect Screen and Windows U brings up the on screen keyboard option (that didn't work either).

Is there any other way to access Task Manager, or is there any other option to fix the problem?

Please follow the below suggestion and check if that helps.

If you see the black screen only
after sign-in and you can see a mouse cursor:

• While at the black screen, try using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to start Task Manager.
  
• If it becomes visible, try finding LockAppHost.exe on the Details tab and ending the task.
  

If this resolves the black screen, use corruption resolution steps.

Perform SFC scan.

I would also suggest you to run the System update readiness command. It detects incorrect manifests, cabinets or registry data, it may replace the incorrect data with corrected version available. Follow the steps.

• Press Windows key + X.
• Click command prompt (Run as administrator).
• In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press
  Enter key after each command:
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
  • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type
Exit, and then press Enter.
