    Windows 10 Alt key always pressed regardless of keyboard and sign in issue


    I'm having this problem where my desktop is acting like the Alt key is permanently pressed. I figured it was my keyboard getting old so I went and got a new one, but the problem is still happening. I tried using the on-screen keyboard and it the issue still happens with it and no keyboards plugged in. I've tried removing devices from my device list, reinstalling device drivers, but nothing has worked.Also I'm not sure it's related but I used to have a problem where I couldn't enter my PIN when signing in as in it wouldn't enter any of the keys I pressed.     • Since when are you facing this issue?

    • Did you make any software or hardware changes on your computer prior to this issue?


    I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

    Step 1: You may check if the ALT key is functioning correctly in on-screen keyboard. It will help us to verify if there is any issue with the keyboard.

    Follow the steps below to open On-screen Keyboard.


    • Windows + Q, type OSK (on-screen keyboard)

    • And check if it works
    Step 2: Run Hardware and device Troubleshooter.

    Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with hardware and devices. I would suggest you to run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your devices. Refer these steps:


    • Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.

    • Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.

    • Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.

    • Run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter.

  3. Alt key not functioning after installation of Windows 10

    Hi Laurie,

    Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community, we appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

    I understand the inconvenience as Alt key is not working on French keyboard after upgrade to Windows 10, we will help you with this issue.

    This issue might be due to drivers as they need to be updated.

    Please some of the below troubleshooting steps and check if you are able to access keyboard:

    Step 1: Uninstall keyboard driver.

    • Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.
    • Select Device Manager.
    • Expand Keyboard.
    • Right on the Keyboard driver
      and click on Uninstall.


    Step 2: Update the driver.

    • Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.
    • Select Device Manager.
    • Expand Keyboard.
    • Right on the Keyboard driver
      and click on Scan for hardware changes.

    Pressing '0' (zero) yields 'q', regardless of keyboard and layout

    Your top row should contain numbers. You have special characters there, but it is likely that because they require modifier keys (specifically Alt) to be pressed to create them, only the rest of the combination is created by pressing the button.

    It should look like this:
