Windows 10: Win 10 Pro - MSG command in CMD - Sending messages to computers on the same network

I am trying to use MSG in CMD to send messages to designated computers on my office's local network. There are only four computers, and each is hardwired into our office server don't know how to find server specs but it's a few months old and cost $15k so likely up to date specs

I can only seem to send messages to myself. I have tried working with the firewall, file sharing permissions etc., but I keep getting the message that "[USER] does not exist or is disconnected"


Given the workarounds I've tried, I believe the error is in my command. That is, I don't think I'm directing the message to the correct destination.


After reading the documentation for MSG I am no further ahead as I am brand new to CMD this is my first project.


Can anyone chime in if they've successfully sent messages to another computer where a physical server is involved? Do I have to send the message to the server? I've tried using the individual computers' names and IPv4 addresses, though the IPv4 addresses are all strange 10.10.20.176 instead of the usual 192.168.... I get the same "user disconnected" error no matter what.

Still a way to send messages to other computers on the network?

The msg command is a Command Prompt command that's used to send a message to one or more users on the network.

When the msg command is triggered, a prompt is displayed on the machine(s) that it was sent to that shows the message as well as the sender's username and the time that the message was sent.

Ope Command Prompt in Windows 10 by typing cmd.exe into Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator.

How to use the msg command to send a message from one Windows 10 computer to another?

I've been researching trying to find as much information as I can, but I'm falling short on being able to execute this.

I'd like to use the msg command to send a message to someone on the same network as me. Both computers are Windows 10 Pro.

Unfortunately it seems like a lot has changed before Windows 10, msg replaced net use, msg requires certain permissions which are configured in certain administrative tools which seem to have been removed from Windows 10, etc.

Essentially what I believe is happening is that if user A is trying to send a message to user B that user A needs the message permission of the Remote Desktop Services permissions on User B's computer. From what I can tell, you're supposed to configure these permissions in Windows Administrative Tool called Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration, which has been removed from Windows 10.

What I've been trying is, say I'm user A attempting to message user B:

msg userB /server:userB'sComputerName Hello!
Then the command returns: userB does not exist or is disconnected

On the other hand, msg /server:localhost * Hi works as expected, I get a message box saying "Hi" - so the command works, I just need to know how to use it across the network to another Windows 10 machine.

Any guidance appreciated.

 

MSG Command on CMD result Error 5 getting session names

I have 2 computer connected over LAN. Both has windows 10 pro version 1607. I open cmd from 1 computer and try to use message command like this :

Lenovo-pc is other computer name. The command result Error 5 getting session names

How to fix this problem ?

• I already set the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\AllowRemoteRPC from 0 to 1 and already restart.
  
• I already run cmd with level admin.
  
• Network discovery, file and printer sharing on private and public network already TURN ON on both computer.
