Windows 10: Why won't the 64 bit windows install on my PC? The hardware is compatible.

When I try to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit I get an error that reads "The system registry contains invalid file paths. Installation cannot proceed. This system image was applied without guaranteeing that drive-letter assignments would match across computers." Windows 10 64 bit had been on my old drive, but it will not install on my new drive.

Can`t Upgrade 32-bit to 64-bit Windows 10

I tried upgrading my notebook/tablet pc from 32-bit to 64-bit windows 10. But it won`t boot from my usb. I checked if its compatible and followed the steps, but I didn`t get the windows "install now" option.

As you said that " it worked fine with 32-bit version", and there is a problem in installing in 64-bit version. But iTunes application is compatible with both the versions. There may be an issue with the PC which/iTunes application which is not supporting
the particular PC.

The error code which you have provided is related to Windows update.

I suggest you to run the Windows update troubleshooter and check if it helps.

You can follow the steps:

  Type Troubleshooting in the search box present in the Taskbar.
  
• 
  Select Troubleshooting.
  
• 
  Select View all on the top left corner.
  
• 
  Run Windows update Troubleshooter.

64 bit compatibility

64 bit processors are capable or running 32 and 64 bit operating systems.

The x86-x64 processor as its known, was introduced in 2003 (AMD 64), before the first mainstream desktop 64 bit version of Windows XP arrived in 2005.

64 bit PC's arrived as future proofing until the 64 bit operating systems were ready. Also, manufacturers continued to preload 32 bit operating systems on 64 bit PC's because of compatibility with some applications and hardware drivers - especially printers,
scanners other peripherals.

It wasn't until Windows 7, a lot of PC manufacturers started loading 64 bit Windows by default, but some still chose 32 bit Windows on 64 bit hardware.

So, you have been running a 32 bit version of Windows on a 64 bit PC.

If you want to switch to Windows 10 64 bit, this basically what you need to do:

Once your computer is set to boot from the DVD or USB, you should see this option.

The Windows logo will appear on screen, this might be here for a while, as long as you see the indicater, everything should be ok.

Select your Language, Time and Keyboard method then click Next.

Click Install now

Wait while Setup starts.

Accept the license terms and click Next

Click Custom

Select the Primary Partition then click Next

You will receive the following warning:

The partition you selected might contain files from a previous Windows Installation. If it does, these files and folders will be moved to a folder named Windows.old. You will be able to access the information in Windows.old, but you will be able to use your
previous version of Windows.

Click OK

Wait while Windows installs

When this phase of setup is complete, Windows will automatically restart and reboot into setup again.

Windows is detecting and installing your hardware. After this is complete, Windows will restart one last time.

Out of Box Experience

The Out of Box Experience page is where you get to configure detailed settings in Windows, which includes creating a user account, privacy, sync PC settings and install modern applications.

Windows will check if there is an active Internet connection. If it does not find one, you will be presented with the following screen.

Create a Local Account and click Next

Wait while Windows finalizes your settings

Continue to wait while Windows installs modern applications.

When setup is complete you can retrieve any personal files from the Windows.old

Browse to C:\ Local Disk and open the Windows.old folder
