  2. Slow folders in File Explorer

I am running a desktop with

    Win 11

    i9 Processor

    64 Gb Memory

    1TB SSD Primary Drive

    2 TB SSD Secondary Drive

I have audio files (WAV, MP3 etc) stored on the secondary drive in 2 unique folders.

When I access these folders it is taking as much as 8 seconds to deliver a listing of files.

Given the drives are SSD'd I am wondering why there is such a lag in time to present?

I do not have this issue with other folders.

  3. Slow file saves (15 seconds) for a simple Word 2019 doc in Windows 11

Hello again, David. Since Word reverted to slow file saves (the "solution" I found on Intel's forum failed), I returned to your suggestion that I create a new folder on a drive (I chose the fast system M.2 C: drive) and save files in various formats. Here are my results:

    1. Save in Word .docx format was instantaneous (however, the file took 12 seconds to open from an external 1TB SanDisk Extreme SSD – may have be connected with an older, slower USB cable, not marked USB 5 or USB 10 - however, the slow save issue exists with all four drives: default C:, internal SSD D:, SanDisk external SSD E:, and a backup 7200rpm 6TB hard disk).
    2. Save As Word .RTF format was slow, 12 seconds for a 197 mb file.
    3. Save from Photoshop was instantaneous.
    4. Save As in LibreOffice .ODT format was fairly fast, about 3 seconds for a 15 mb file.
    Thanks again.

File explorer slow opening folder containing shortcuts

I have a folder (lets call it folder AP) that contains approximately 30 shortcuts to other folders located in a separate folder (call it folder CJ; all of these folders are located on the same drive). The folder AP has a few files in it but it primarily contains shortcuts to other folders.

When I try to open folder AP, windows explorer takes a looong time to display the contents. The green progress bar shows up near the top of the window and it may take a minute or so to display the contents.

I do not have any problems with any other folders I access. For example, folder CJ is much larger (at least 20 times larger but with far few shortcuts) than folder AP, but I can open folder CJ almost instantly. No other folders have this same issue.

To troubleshoot, I have attempted several tasks:

    • I moved the shortcuts to a newly created folder, opened folder AP, and the remaining files showed up pretty much instantly. I then tried to open the newly created folder and that one was slow to open, similar to the performance of folder AP prior to moving the shortcuts.
      • To me, this indicates that the shortcuts are causing the delay.
    • I changed the folder advanced properties for folder AP to unselect "Allow files in this folder to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" and selected for this to apply to all subfolders and subfiles
      • This had little to no effect.
    • I've cleared temporary files, performed disk cleanup, scanning for viruses and malware. No benefits.
    • Restarted computer and router. No benefits.
Internet speeds are good, well above 200 Mbps upload and download.

The folders I am accessing (folder AP and folder CJ) are located on our company's network, accessed through a VPN. Most files/folders I access via the VPN are accessible quickly and without issue, but folder AP opens significantly slower than others.

Is it a known issue for folder shortcuts to slow down processes? Is there a solution to make the folder shortcuts display faster?
