Microsoft family features - child profile not working properly

    Prakhar Khare

I went into System Properties > Advanced and clicked
Settings under User Profiles and deleted the user profile there.

I followed the provided instructions and completed the steps in Windows PowerShell and rebooted, but had the same result when I tried to run https://aka.ms/familyverify (Windows
10 suggests searching for an app in the Microsoft Store).

Also, while PowerShell went through 100+ steps, some of them gave some errors regarding the current software being newer versions than what was trying to be installed, or errors indicating that
requested actions could not be taken due to accounts not being logged in at the time.

    Under Settings >
Accounts > Your info the Verify link is missing for this child's profile.

I did try following a link that should not be there on a Windows Family Features Child account, which is
Sign in with a local account instead and entered all of the requested account name and password info. Fortunately the task resulted in an error that indicated that it could not complete the request, so a local account was not created.

All of this leads me to believe that the Microsoft account services are not linked or installed properly for this child account. Perhaps the most recent Windows 10 update may have corrupted the previous
child profile (which had issues with Internet Settings cache size too low for practical internet use in Edge and IE), and may have also corrupted the Default user profile on this computer.

I will not try to remove the child from the family, because I don't think that will resolve the issue (Microsoft seems to like to charge to add children even in troubleshooting). I will
    try the following:

    1. I will add this child's Microsoft account to another computer, and see what happens with his profile on that computer
    2. I will examine another child's account on this computer to see whether it was affected by the Edge / IE cache issue
    3. I will see whether I can enable a third child's Microsoft account on this computer and see what the result is when that account profile is created.

Please let me know if there are other steps you recommend (other than removing his MS account from my family)

    Regards

    Mark

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.
    "

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]

Microsoft family features - child profile not working properly

I recently determined that my son's Windows 10 account profile (Windows 10 regular user account linked to his Family/Child Microsoft email account) had become corrupted, as several things were not working correctly under his Windows 10 login (Edge and IE
were limited to 8MB of internet cache)

I removed the profile, and had him login again, and a new profile was created, resolving the Edge issues, however the Family Features are not active or working. His time limits are not enforced, and my Family settings online at https://account.microsoft.com/family/
indicate that there is an issue with his account.

"Your child needs to sign in again with their Microsoft account on their device for family features to work properly."

The resolution steps indicate that I should do the following:

    "To fix this:

    1. Have your child sign in with their Microsoft account on their device.
    2. Open Microsoft Edge and go to https://aka.ms/familyverify.
    3. Follow the instructions on screen to verify their account."

When I follow the steps and try to go to the URL, Windows 10 attempts to open the Microsoft Store app to look for an app to open MS_WPC

On the same computer, when I go to the same URL, it asks for my live credentials, then updates the Family Features settings.

It seems like windows is not fully linking to his Windows Live account. For his siblings, their accounts show up as their email address until they login, then it resolves to their full name. For the new profile for him, this does not happen. I have removed
the profile a few times and tried starting over again, but it yields the same result. Any ideas or suggestions?

Perhaps has the default profile become corrupted?

EDIT: He has received notification that his time is up, but when he requests more time, there is an error that indicates there may be an issue with the Internet connection (which there is not).
