Windows 10: What the HIPM/DIPM modes means in AHCI link power management settings that in the power...

In the power options, There is the hard disk option which inside of it there is the AHCI Link power management option. and there is 5 options of it in both "on battery" or "on plugged in" : 1.Active2.HIPM3.HIPM+DIPM4.DIPM5.Lowest- I'm just wondering for what that options mean, and if they have an bad effect on my SSD about speed and power consumption or not, And which one should i choose for better write/read speed..

The following settings are responsible on the ALPM:

• ALPM – HIPM/DIPM. It will set the Link Power Management policy:
  • Active: Neither HIPM or DIPM allowed
  • HIPM: HIPM only is allowed
  • HIPM+DIPM:HIPM and DIPM are allowed
  • DIPM: DIPM only is allowed
  • Lowest:HIPM, DIPM and DEVSLP are allowed (if DEVSLP is supported by the storage device).
• ALPM – Adaptive. It will set the period of AHCI link idle time before the link is put in the slumber state when you have HIPM, DIPM, HIPM+DIPM or Lowest set above. It can be set to be from 0 to 300,000 milliseconds. If the Active is set above, then this will have no effect.

 

PC freezes/lags when returning from sleep mode?

It changes the way Windows wakes up your disk. When you opened "AHCI Link Power Management – HIPM / DIPM” What was selected ?

I was able to significantly reduce my laptop's power consumption by setting my AHCI SSDs to "Lowest" mode which finally allowed my Intel i7 7700HQ to enter package sleep states deeper than C2. (It was set to "HIPM" by default.)

Before, when it could not go deeper than C2 my CPU idle power consumption was 2.0 - 3.0W watts. Now that the package can go up to C7 it idles around 0.3 - 0.4W.
