Windows 10: What happened to my Product Key's validity?

Hello Microsoft! It has been many years but I finally decided to upgrade my PC from it's initial build. The problem is that when I upgraded the motherboard, it just so happened to be faulty. Even worse is that I transferred my product key over to that motherboard to activate Windows. Well long story short I had to refund that board and get it sent back and ordered another one. Here's the kicker. Now my Windows product key that I have been using for the better part of 7 years is now invalid? It was just working on the now defunct motherboard and now it will not work on my new-new motherboard. I

Something Happened ... Failed to Validate Product Key


I'm having the same problem. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, the Windows 10 pre-check is green, I've tried updating to 10 using Windows Update, the Media Creation Tool and Techbench. I following the instructions very carefully on Techbench, I've verified that my version shows that it is fully licensed for Windows 7 Pro using slmgr /dlv, fully updated 7, disabled my AV, created a new Admin account to run the update, I still get Windows 10 Update Something Happened Setup has failed to validate the product key. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

 

Valid Win7 Product Key not accepted by Win 10 upgrade

Hi,

I did not realise I had been at all vague, my apologies.

Unfortunately my neighbour now has his laptop back as I got nowhere. I have suggested he wait until the windows 10 upgrade system makes it available through windows update (it is in the queue).

As stated, I have tried running from the media created by the media creation tool to a USB (this is what I used to successfully upgrade my laptop and surface Pro). I have also run the media creation tool and opted for it to upgrade directly rather than save the files.

The operating system is Win7 Home premium OEM version. The key is valid and I re-validated it to be sure with the MS online actvation system. The laptop is 64-bit.

On each occasion it goes through the initial install steps and then gets to the screen where it asks for the product key.

On this screen there is no skip option and as the product key is not accepted, the only option is to cancel the install.

For some reason the upgrade seems to be taking a different path on this machine and does not give the skip option.

You might want to reset your PC under Advanced Startup


*From the start menu, choose the power icon

*Hold down shift and choose to restart

*Hold shift until a blue screen pops up with icons. Select Troubleshoot

*Choose Reset this PC and choose to save your files; I did and the reset worked just fine

*Follow prompts and your computer should work again!
