Windows 10: Using VPN without Microsoft Rewards

Fron what I've read, using a VPN to get more points will get your account suspended, is it possible that I can use a VPN without participating in Microsoft Rewards? Do I need an account that doesn't participate in Microsoft Rewards?

So on an apple phone, there is now a VPN option in the settings. I always turn the VPN on when I use my apple phone. I do my Microsoft rewards searches on the phone. So, will my Microsoft rewards account get banned for using the apple VPN? Because I've heard
that Microsoft bans your Microsoft rewards account for using a VPN. I also don't cheat the Microsoft rewards point system using a VPN.
