Windows 10: Usb C 3 port turned itself off and wont turn on

Hey, i was tryna plug in my thunderbolt dock, when the connection happened and then it just disconnected and no docking station connects. Ive had this same problem occur a few months back, but it just started working on its own after a few weeks, i messed around with some settings and driver but to no avail.

USB ports will not turn off

Different system, I know, but this is what I would do to disable the USB 3.1 PowerShare ports. These are the ones that remain hot when the system is off, but still connected to AC. Used for charging phones, etc.

It is in the BIOS. These would be MY instructions, but something very similar in yours. Just have to poke and look for it or consult the MB/BIOS manual.

Enabling USB PowerShare on your Alienware system


PowerShare must be enabled at the BIOS. To enable PowerShare do the following:

1. Turn on the system
2. Tap repeatedly the F2 key as soon as you turn on the system
3. Go to the Advanced tab
4. Select USB PowerShare from the list and press Enter
5. Select Enable and press Enter
6. Press F10 to save and exit

 

Issue with USB ports turning off

1. Does the issue occur with all the USB devices plugged in to the PC?
   
2. Does the issue occur when you plug in the USB device to any of the UISB port on the PC?
   
3. Did you make any changes to the PC prior to this issue?
   

Let us try these steps one by one to check if that makes any difference.

Step 1: Suggest you to run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter and check if that helps.

1. From the Settings screen, choose Update & Security.
   
2. Select Troubleshoot. Look for Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter and run it.
   
3. Follow the on-screen direction to complete the process and if required please apply the fix it.
   
4. Once it is done, please reboot the computer and check the status.
   

Step 2: Suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers on the PC to check if that helps.

1. Press ‘Windows + R’ keys, type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run window and press Enter.
   
2. In Device Manager, expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
   
3. Right click a device under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and click uninstall.
   
4. Perform same step for other devices. When completed, restart the computer.
   

All USB controllers will reinstall automatically.

turn on USB ports

We just noticed the idleness of the post that you've created. Just here to check if you already have any updates after performing the recommendations of Andre, to check BIOS and chipset driver updates.

Further more, please let us know what are the changes that were made prior to the event of loosing the USB ports.

On our perception, we do not recall any trigger that can turn the ports on or off, unless the drivers from the
DeviceManager was uninstalled or removed. You double-check its status and resolve the matter by following this method:

• Click Start, and then click Run.
  
  Note: If you are running Windows Vista, click
  Start, and then use the Start Search box.
  
• Type devmgmt.msc, and then click
  OK. Device Manager opens.
• Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  
  Note: You might have to scroll down the list to find this item.
  
• Right-click the first USB controller under Universal Serial Bus controllers, and then click
  Uninstall to remove it.
• Repeat step 4 for each USB controller that is listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
• Restart the computer. After the computer starts, Windows will automatically scan for hardware changes and reinstall all the USB controllers that you uninstalled.
• Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

If the USB port recognizes the device and if you can use the device, you are finished. If anything fails, please feel free to hit us back, and bring a few updated results in hand, in order for us to proceed accurately.
