Windows 10: unidentified ethernet and ethernet cant connect to DHCP

Even when i have my ethernet plugged, it says no internet unidentified network. I also notice that it cant connect to DHCP server. I've tried doing ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew in the command prompt but it just says No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 1 while it has its media disconnected. No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 2 while it has its media disconnected. Ethernet connection: 'unidentified network'


Hi all,

I'm yet another victim of the unidentified network Windows bug. I've had my Surface Pro 4 for two weeks now and ethernet has never worked through my docking station. Originally I thought it was a surface thing, but apparently all Windows users are confronted by it at some stage.

The media disconnected message has no particular meaning, as my network adapter detects an ethernet plug. It simply cannot be identified. Troubleshooting gives me the following message: "ethernet" does not have a valid IP configuration.

I checked multiple times and the IP and DNS addresses are set to automatic.
Things that didn't help

1. ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew
2. disabling and reenabling the ethernet adapter
3. resetting winsock
4. resetting ipv4 and ipv6
5. reinstalling the ethernet adapter

Ethernet connection suddenly not working, showing as 'Unidentified Network'

After plugging in my ethernet cable today it has completely stopped working, and the connection is showing as 'Unidentified Network', no Internet.

I have tested on my laptop and it works perfectly so the cable is not at fault.

I tried the command ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew and it gave the error: "An error occurred while renewing interface Ethernet : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

Any help would be very appreciated.
