Windows 10: unable to install npcap: failed to create the npcap service: 0x80070005

I am having an error with installing npcap 1.6 with my window 10 laptop. As suggested, I tried to reinstall the installer 1.6 many times but none worked. Here was what I had:How can I fix this error? Thank you, Huy Nguyen.

The Npcap Loopback Adapter

If you want to capture traffic inside a local machine, for example, from one service to another service, you'll have a hard time because that traffic isn't being sent over a network interface, so it can't be captured with conventional sniffing tools.

You can only see that traffic if you could, somehow, create an interface on the loopback (127.0.0.1). That's what NpCap (Nmap packet capture) provides. Nmap is the organization that wrote NpCap.

It's not a 'problem.' It's just a tool.

 

The Npcap Loopback Adapter

I used IOBit Uninstaller and uninstalled NPCap in the list. This solved the problem and the adapter was deleted. I had this adapter sinds yesterday when I installed Bitdefender Homescanner. I believe it's harmless, but deleted it nevertheless.

 

Installing Npcap on Windows 10

Recently, after prompt initiated update, the Wireshark could no longer detect my ethernet interfaces, leaving only USBs on the list.

Since problems persisted after reboot I decided to reinstall Wireshark with all the same options. The situation didn't improve, at which point begun to suspect the driver.

Quick check gave me conflicting information.

So apprentlly, the service was present, but couldn't start, because relevant file was missing. With Wireshark still coming up empty, I decided to uninstall npcap also, and start with a clean slate.

Unfortunately, uninstalling Npcap turned out to be harder than I thought, failing and producing following log:

Npcap. Device manager also detected the Npcap loopback interface.

So the driver service wasn't running but apparently some vestige of it remained. As a test, I tried to reinstall Wireshark, along with Npcap.

To my surprise, the Wireshark detected Npcap (of appropriate version) and didn't let me install it again.

And finally, I checked the:

To see if the relevant files are present, only to find both of them.

This is all the more vexing, because I have the same version running on my laptop. I don't know where to go from here.
