Windows 10: Synaptics Fingerprint Device Cannot Start

Hi,


Posting this for the year 2020


It's been a week now that my fingerprint sensor is not working and when I checked it at the device manager, it says "This device cannot start. Code 10"


Here are the workarounds I have already tried upon searching, and these did not work:


1. Update to latest driver using automatic update

• Driver Date: 3/28/2019
• Driver Version: 5.2.3536.26

2. Rolled back to older version of Driver

• Driver Date: 10/28/2017
• Driver Version: 5.2.311.26

3. Edited group policies and registry

4. Updated BIOS thru Lenovo System Update

5. Reset fingerprint data in BIOS

6. Downloaded driver from lenovo website Date is I think 2018

7. Uninstall and disable and then installing drivers


Here are some additional info of my system:

• Lenovo T470
• Windows version 1909

Any help would be much appreciated

Interface software for Synaptics WBF fingerprint driver

To better assist you with your concern, I'd like to know the following:

• Confirm which build is currently installed on your device. To check, follow the steps below:

1. Press Windows key + R, then type in winver.
2. Click OK.

• Are you getting any error messages when trying to set up your fingerprint?
• Were there any recent changes made prior to this issue?

Meanwhile, make sure that your laptop has the latest driver installed for Synaptics WBF Fingerprint Driver. According to
HP's website, the latest driver is version
4.5.345.0 Rev.A.

If your laptop is already running the latest driver for the fingerprint device, try to uninstall and reinstall the driver:

1. Press Windows key + R, then type in devmgmt.msc and press
Enter.

2. In the Device Manager window, locate the
Synaptics WBF Fingerprint Driver and right-click on it.

3. Select Uninstall.

4. Reboot your computer and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.

5. If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.

synaptics Pointing Device Driver

Try Uninstalling your device first, restart and then Install again.

Step 1:

• Open device manager by right clicking This PC and select Manage. On the left pane, click the same.
• Under Mouse and pointing devices, right click the synaptics driver and click Uninstall.

Step 2:

Restart when prompted. Remember, Restart!

Step 3:

Install the synaptics driver again using the setup utility provided by the manufacturer

 

Fingerprint reader not working

Thanks for the response. We need to update the driver associated to fingerprint hardware to help resolve the issue. Follow the steps below:

• Go to Control Panel --> Device Manager.
• In the Device Manager, click Biometric Devices and expand the list. The fingerprint sensor is listed as a
  Synaptics FP Sensor, depending on the model of your system.
• Right click on the device and choose Properties.
• In the Properties, click “Driver” tab.
• Click “Update Driver” for searching updated driver package even if the driver is up-to-date.
