Windows 10: Symbol keys are displaying French characters instead

The keyboard on my Lenovo laptop is displaying French characters rather than the intending symbol. For example, pressing the -forward slash key- causes -é- to be displayed. I tried using quotation marks when writing that last sentence, but È was displayed instead.

ALT0140 does not produce the french character: linked o-e, in US-international keyboard

Hi Mosken, thanks much for your answer. I am following a course of french language using the app Duolingo. I am Brazilian, and the program presents exercises that alternate french and Portuguese sentences. So, I need my keyboard to keep the US-international standard all the time. French accents can be made with the keyboard; however, the regular keys don't produce unique french characters like the attached o and e. I followed your suggestion and added French to the list of idioms. I went then to the touch keyboard in settings and was able to include a french keyboard to the set of keyboards available. However, even with the French keyboard set instead of the US-international, the combinations Alt0140 and Alt0156 don't create the character desired. They print instead one character for each digit keyed. I checked in internet, even in french, the means to have the oe. All the sites specify the same Alt combinations to obtain the character. However, they don't work.

I use Windows 11 Pro - Brazilian edition - on a Dell 3590 notebook. I will appreciate any clue leading to a solution, although I suspect there is no way to do it without a native french keyboard.

After the April updates, my keyboard is not working. Special characters not displaying properly.

Prior to installing the Microsoft April updates, (Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 21H2 for x64 based systems KB5025221) and (.NET 6.0.16 Security Update for x64 Client) KB5025915 my keyboard was working properly. Now some of the upper-case characters in the number row are displaying the wrong character.

I.e.

• the uppercase 2 displays the double quote instead of the @ (I found the @ sign where the double quote sign should be.
  
• The uppercase 3 displays £, (the symbol for the British pound) instead of the pound sign. I have no idea where the pound sign is. Probably had to get it from the special characters.
  

I am using a Microsoft wired keyboard. I exchanged the keyboard with a Logitech wireless keyboard, and it does the same thing.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

How to insert text symbols and special characters in windows

There are few ways to type symbols in Windows 10.

1 - Search "charmap" in windows search to find symbols. Character Map app will appear with a list of symbols.

2 - Use ALT key code to type text symbols.
