Storage Optimizer couldn't complete slab consolidation - insufficient number of slabs could...

I'm receiving the following error on my Storage Spaces pool when running the storage optimizer:

The storage optimizer couldn't complete slab consolidation on Storage Space Pool E: because: The slab consolidation operation was aborted because an insufficient number of slabs could be reclaimed based on the limits specified in the registry. 0x89000028

The pool seems to be running correctly and I'm not seeing any issues from a user perspective. However, that error is generated every time an optimization is attempted.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro 20H2 build 19042.685 on a server with 8 drives configured into a single large pool. The 8 drives are of varying sizes with the largest being a 14TB drive. The OS is on a separate SSD boot drive.

I'm looking for some assistance on how to correct this problem.

    :)

Reclaiming formerly used space in Storage Spaces

I have a large, mirrored, thinly provisioned space spread across multiple hard drives using Windows Storage Spaces in Windows 10 Pro. The space is about 4TB (8TB with resiliency).

I have recently come to the opinion that there is a large number of files that I would like to reallocate to another, less resilient volume (just a simple volume).

So, I have created the new volume, moved over about 400GB of these files (there are about 1.2TB all together), and I can see that the amount of space used by the new volume has increased, but the amount of space used in the previous volume has not dropped.

I have run the defrag utility on the space, and have run the following powershell commands:

but the amount of space used by the old space holds steady. It spends a lot of time Enumerating Slabs, but when it comes to doing stuff, it doesn't really do anything. I have run both of these as the local user AND as administrator.

Any ideas on why the previous slabs are not being cleared up?

    UPDATE

I have just run Optimize-Volume with the -Verbose switch, and I got this result.

The issue appears to originate from the line Slabs pinned unmovable. Can anyone enlighten as to what makes a slab "unmovable".

Insufficient Storage space to download the updates on Windows 10.

    Hi Minnie,

Disk defragmentation is the process of consolidating fragmented data on a volume (such as a hard disk or a storage device) so it will work more efficiently. Disk Defragmenter is a tool that rearranges the data on your volume and reunites fragmented
data so your computer can run more efficiently.

Try analyzing and optimizing the drive on which updates are to be installed.

    • Press Windows icon key on the keyboard, type Defragment and Optimize Drive and select the top most search result.
    • From the window, select the drive on which the app files & folders are located and click on
      Analyze.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions, wait for the drive to complete analyzing and click on
      Optimize.
    • Wait for the action to complete and check if the issue is resolved.
    • Follow above steps to analyze and optimize other drives on the PC.

Write to us with the stratus of the shortage of space issues on the PC for further assistance. Your reply is important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.

Storage Optimizer couldn't complete slab consolidation - insufficient number of slabs could...

    Compacting virtual hard disks

Just did a similar test. I have a clean install of 10561 with about 300MB of programs installed.

Before doing anything the VHDX was 10.54GB. I reduced the size of Windows to 6.50GB.
Ran defrag free space and slab consolidation (took less than 1 minute) and sdelete (took 40 minutes)

Compact option in Edit disk in Hyper-V reduced the VHDX to 7.38GB. Save and restore using Macrium reduced it to 6.65GB.

So it seems Macrium is more efficient but IMO more of a faff.

    Code:

After running Compact in Edit Disk
