Windows 10: SOLUTION: Synaptics WBDI SGX-enabled Fingerprint Reader "Device Can Not Start Code 10" -...

TL;DR: longstanding fingerprint scanner problem, fixed by reseating ribbon cable, and installing latest driver from MS update catalog https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=USB\VID_06CB&PID_0081


So I had an issue with the Synaptics WBDI fingprint scanner/reader in my Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKB 80X6. It first stopped working after a Windows 10 update, and then was patchy after a number of troubleshooting attempts, sometimes it would work for an hour, sometimes days, eventually it just stopped altogether. If you want to throw me into a depression spiral just say "Device can not start. Code 10".


Seriously, it took me literally years to solve it. I gave up months ago trying. As of 15 minutes ago, it's working, finally.


I'm posting here, because others out there may be afflicted with the same tormented thoughts and nightmares that I've had. This godforsaken fingerprint reader, which is presumably identical hardware as that which functions perfectly in plenty of other laptops, was my white whale, so I'm posting this here in case it is yours too. Also, because I'll probably reinstall Windows one day after an SSD upgrade and have the same flippin' problem and forget what I did.

To my knowledge, this primarily affects Lenovo users, because Lenovo doesn't provide updated drivers for the Synaptics biometric scanner.

I happened to be doing some maintenance on my Yoga, and figured, "what the heck, why not see if there's been any change in this problem"

Well, an update from August 2019, pointed me to Microsoft's Update Catalog, I'm not sure if everyone else has used https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/ before, but I sure hadn't. I threw my device ID into the search field, and would you believe I got a result:

Lenovo's "latest" driver: January 12, 2017 Version 5.5.2603.1050

Microsoft Update catalog: June 5, 2019 Version 5.5.2811.1050

Well, I have to tell you, I just about peed with excitement.


Uninstalled the device, removing the driver. Restarted.

Installed the updated driver. Restarted.


Device can not start. Code 10


I thought I was going to throw my laptop, but then I read the last post in the Lenovo Forum thread:

"I unplugged and replugged the ribbon cable for the fingerprint sensor and now it works just fine. "


Guess what. I did that, restarted, disabled and re-enabled the Synaptics device in Device Manager. And lo, I can login with my fingerprint.

I'm a happy Yoga user again.

Synaptics WBDI fingerprint driver not working on Lenovo Ideapad 520 after Windows 10 1803 Update.

Has anyone else experienced their Synaptics WBDI fingerprint driver giving the error:
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
{Operation Failed} in Synaptics WBDI - SGX
Or This device cannot start. (Code 10) in Synaptics WBDI
The requested operation was unsuccessful.
The fingerprint reader was working fine before the 1803 update but the driver appears to have failed after the update.
My driver version is 5.5.2620.1050.A.
I've already tried another driver, but unfortunately.
I already reinstalled Windows 10 but that doesn't help either.
I have Versie Windows 10.0.18363 Build 18363

My driver version is 5.5.2620.1050.A_NonSGX about 30 May 2018 and this is the latest driver available.

Does anyone have a link from Lenovo or Microsoft to a more reliable driver?

Synaptics WBDI fingerprint driver is not working on lenovo Ideapad 520?

After windows 10 update 2019 i am not able to use the fingerprint scanner on my lenovo ideapad 520 which has inbuild fingerprint scanner and runs on driver which is synaptics wbdi finger print. it starts showing code 10 on device manager i have tied everything
reg edit,gpedit,unistall and installing the driver sgx and non sgx drivers it is not able to work or function properly can anyone help i m new and tired searching all forums all night many lenovo consumers have same problem it seems no one is able to find
the right fix to it
