  1. Settings wont stay open, search bar doesnt work

Hello, Had some ram blue screens, changed the faulty ram and repaired drives, although it said nothing was wrong. Now windows feels a bit unresponsive, and if I open settings, it automatically closes after a few seconds, so I cannot access anything within settings, meaning I cant check for windows updates or check windows defender. The task bar also has some problems when I boot my PC such as unresponsiveness and it needing to restart. Although given time, it seems to work, although the search bar does not work. If i try to search in the search bar, it brings up the grey background of the searc

  2. Settings crashes on open and start menu search bar doesnt work

Hi Chris. I'm Greg, 10 years awarded Windows MVP, here to help you.

    1) Re-register the Settings app in Windows 10 from Option 2 here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/3175-apps-re...

    2) Try these fixes for Windows 10 Start Menu search not working:

    https://www.makeuseof.com/ways-fix-windows-10-s...

    http://woshub.com/start-menu-taskbar-search-not...

    https://www.maketecheasier.com/fix-windows-10-s...

    https://windowsreport.com/windows-search-wont-w...

(Avoid ad links which intrude into editorial copy, especially avoid Restoro, PC Repair Tool and Reimage ads)

    3) Go over Windows using this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account to replace yours which may be corrupted. Then if necessary continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

    4) If nothing else works then do a Repair Install, by installing Media Creation Tool, open tool and choose to Upgrade Now. This reinstalls Windows while keeping files, programs and most settings in place, is the most stable method to advance to the latest version, and solves most problems. Tutorial here: https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/fix-windows...

A Reset is an inferior reinstall to the in -place Repair Install and gold standard Clean Install. This Clean Install is the gold standard used by millions without one ever coming back with further problems:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Report back results for each step so I know what else to suggest.

Feel free to ask back any questions. Based on the results you post back I may have other suggestions if necessary.

  3. Search Bar/Cortana

    Hello,

Thank you for posting your concern here in Microsoft Community and welcome to the Windows 10 family.

From the description, I understand that you are still receiving the pop up notifications, despite having disabled the search functionality in windows 10.

Steps to disable the Search Bar

    • Right click on the task bar.
    • Select the "Search" option.
    • Select "Disable."
However, if the above steps don't work out, perform the below suggested steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

Open a CMD window started as Administrator.

    Repair corruption: Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth.

Run this command next: Sfc /scannow

    Now run these two commands:

    PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Hope the above information was helpful.

    Thank You.

    Cortana/search bar not opening

I'm unsure how to bring up the command prompt without the search. I do not see the CMD option in complete list and of course the search bar is what we're troubleshooting.
