  1. Safe transfer of files from soon to be cancelled individual MS account to our family account?

Hello. My elderly father in law who lives with us has an MS account which renews shortly. I have added him to my family MS account and want to cancel his current account on expiry. He has a lot of files under his existing account including excel, word and photos. Will these remain on his computer when we cancel his account and be accessible through my account? Or do I need to back everything up and re load? Thank you

    :)

    Account problem

    Aslam,

Yes, the procedure is complex but I split it into individual steps that, I believe, can be followed by anybody.

Booting into Safe mode is explained in section 3. All steps are included. If there is a step you cannot do then please tell me the para number and which aspect of it is confusing you.

Getting into the built-in Administrator account is explained in section 4. All steps are included. If there is a step you cannot do then please tell me the para number and which aspect of it is confusing you.

Any local account and any MSAccount can be made a "Standard" account or an Admin account. You need to be logged in to an Admin account in order to raise a Standard account to Admin status.
    - Once you are logged in to one of the Admin accounts that I suggest that you create, you can go to Settings, Accounts, Family & other users so that you can select the account you want to raise then click on the Change account type button that appears.
    - Be wary of promoting then relying upon the current problem account because its user profile might be damaged. I cannot say that it is definitely damaged but only that something has gone wrong.

  3. Transfer Xbox Account to a Family Member

Thank for your response. Your Microsoft account is the account you use to manage your interactions with Xbox Live and other Microsoft services, including Outlook.com, OneDrive, Skype, Windows 10, Windows Phone, and more. This central account allows you to:

    • Manage all your Microsoft services from a single account
    • Sign in to your Xbox console or the Windows 10 Xbox App
    • Manage your purchases and subscriptions
    • Establish and manage family settings to keep your kids safe

You can create a new Microsoft account to set it as an Xbox Live account, for your son can transfer your son's password handles, game licenses, and account activity. The steps are provided on this

    link
    that was shared earlier.

We'll keep an eye on your response.

Bypass Family Settings by conversion to Local Account

What you describe should be impossible. To test this I just now created a child account on my PC and signing in to it tried to change it to either an admin account or a local account. Could not do that.

The only way your son can change his account to a local account and "remove" it from Family, or create a new account is to have access to an admin account on that same PC (your account), or alternatively access to your admin MS account's Family settings online. For that he needs both your MS account username and password. It means that if you protect your own personal admin account (MS account) with a strong password and especially the Two-Step Verification, he has no way to access that account and he should not be able / is not able to change your Family settings or his account status.
