Realtek PCIe GBE device cannot start code 10

    Hi,
PC is an old MSI board G31M3-L V2 (MS-7529) with latest BIOS 2.80
    WIn 10 Pro.
The onbaord NIC is a Realtek PCIe GBE .
While the PC is booting one light is flashing in the network socket. When WIn10 boots the light is off, a red x is on the Network icon in the systray. In device manager there is a yellow triangle on the NIC . In details it says:
This device cannot start (code 10)
The driver is the latest from Realtek 10.8.311.2016 (11-Mar-16)
I have tried different drivers, uninstalling and reboot. But no solution.
    Any suggestions?

    :)

  2. Windows 10: Missing network protocol

    Hi Deepak

I have a similar problem with a number of users' PC that are running on Windows 10 and were also updated with the most resent update that took place in the week 22 Feb. to 26 Feb. 2016.

I have tried the following: -

    • Shutdown and restart the PC
    • Update Realtek PCIe GBE NIC drivers for Windows 10
    • Downgrade Realtek PCIe GBE NIC drivers for Windows 10
    • Uninstall and re-install drivers for Realtek PCIe GBE NIC
    • Disable NetBios over TCP/IP protocol in IP v4 advanced settings, in networking
    • Reset Winsock, in command prompt running as administrator
    • Reset IP, in command prompt running as administrator
    • Turned off Green Ethernet in the advanced settings of Realtek PCIe GBE NIC, in networking
    • Turned off power management in the advanced settings of the Realtek PCIe GBE NIC, in networking

All of the above mentioned techniques resolve the problem for a limited period of time before the missing protocols problem re-appears

Is there a problem between Windows 10 and Realtek PCIe GBE NIC?

Or is it just a problem with the latest Windows 10 updates?

Needless to say that a lot of time has been spent on this problem. A solution is urgently needed!

    Please let me know.

    Best regards

PC no longer boots into windows 10

    I think so…

    Please select boot device:

    • Windows Boot Manger (PO: BIWIN SSD)

    • UEFI: IP4 Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

    • UEFI: IP6 Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
    Enter setup

Looks like you have a Realtek RTL8111c ( in Manual linked above) which is supported under win10 ( see below) but it's possible on an older board you have an IRQ Conflict since it won't start ,perhaps you can assign IRQ's in the Bios if needed or in Device Manager?- Resources Tab I think? maybe.....

I had the same error with windows 7. I upgraded to 10 in hope that a new driver would fix it. I did try this driver , by manually "upgrading" to it , but same error.

Under resources it says: this device isn't using any resources because it has a problem.

Realtek PCIe GBE device cannot start code 10

I am now thinking it's a hardware problem. I no longer have the activity light in the network socket when booting.
I installed WinXP on an old drive , and installed the latest driver from Realtek site - same error in XP.
I tried to downgrade the BIOS to all the old versions - no change.
So I put a PCI NIC which works fine (but it's an old 10/100 card).
The weird thing is that after I disabled the onboard LAN in the BIOS, the activity light now comes on when I put the network cable in the socket.
If anyone has any explanation for this - great. Otherwise I will assume the onboard NIC is dead.

Did you try assigning an IRQ Manually in the Bios to the Onboard Nic? it maybe conflicting with the Graphics card for example.

I did not because from what I read, since Windows 2000 , it does not matter what you assign in the Bios, Windows manages its own IRQs. Also, like I said, the NIC was not assigned any IRQ under the resources tab.
But I will take a look in the Bios.

I checked the BIOS - there is no option to configure IRQs

  12. Unistall the driver and then pull the batery out from the bios to reset it.
Then go in your bios and make the settings you had again

    What would that achieve?

  14. For one, the driver should get downloaded in Windows Update ...
IF you remove the driver software when you uninstall it (you might get a dialog box asking to remove the software OR there might be a checkbox to remove the software ... or you might not get prompted)

Answer yes or check the box to remove the software.

Run Windows Update manually to get the driver.

You'd have to pull the battery, disconnect the AC power, and hold the power button down for 2 minutes to reset CMOS to default values.
But I don't think resetting CMOS is necessary for what sounds like a driver or HW issue.

HW issues are easy to test, boot to a Linux stick and see if the HW works under that OS.
So I'll focus on the driver first.

I have already uninstalled a few times, removing the files after promted, and letting windows reinstall. I Did not try Linux, but I tried Win 7 amd XP with the same result. So I am leaning towards a hardware problem.
