Windows 10: Opening an excel document changes virtual desktop

I'm trying to setup my PC such that I can open a new virtual desktop to start a new task without changing the task I had been working on.When opening an application in a virtual desktop, I expect it to open in the current virtual desktop, not whichever desktop happens to already have the application already open. Switching to a different virtual desktop and then opening does not allow me to separate tasks to different desktops and makes it hard to find which window just opened. often I have a project open involving 10+ excel windows and silo them all to a desktop until I have time to continu

Scenario:

• I have 2 virtual desktops open in Windows 10... Desktop-1 and Desktop-2
• Excel document is currently open on Desktop-2
• Switch back to Desktop-1, and open another Excel document, by double clicking on the document shortcut
• Document opens in Desktop-2

Why? The document should open on the desktop where I opened it? This makes for too much switching back and forth. I'd rather just clutter up a single desktop instead of jumping around all the time. Can I override this counter-intuitive behavior somehow?
Am I missing the point of what virtual desktops are supposed to achieve? Maybe I should just be using dual monitors instead.

 

Opening Apps on a multiple virtual desktops

When I open an App, i.e. Excel, on one Virtual Desktop and then try and open an excel document from file explorer on a second virtual desktop the document opens up and switches views to the original virtual desktop making using virtual desktops frustrating
and time consuming. Is there anyway to get Apps to ensure that apps open on the current desktop even when the App is already open on another desktop?

I have a written a program which enhances Windows 10 desktops and works around this issue for you by detecting the switch to a new desktop to open the existing document and then open of a new document - it then moves it back where it belongs.
