Windows 10: OneDrive is, by far, the worst product Microsoft makes.

OneDrive will delete ALL copies on every other drive in every device, including desk assistants, home utility controllers, printeers, etc.. I can't understand why Microsoft sells such a bad product. It is easy to delete all your data because the instructions for it are vague and hard to understand. Also, since OneDrive encrypts data, and performs the encryption, they also hold the ability to decrypt data. This can cause a data breach. I lost 400 files and npw they;re gone forever. Arthur

OneDrive - Another over complicated product from Microsoft?

I recreated what I think you wanted on a virtual machine, in a very straightforward way. Here are my steps.

Step 1: Launch OneDrive for the first time. Click on the option at bottom to change the default location for my OneDrive to a second hard drive on my system. (if you already have oneDrive setup, go to settings and choose Unlink account to get back to this point).





Step #2. Create a OneDrive folder on my E:\ drive, and select it.



Step #3. Go into newly created E:\OneDrive and create folders for Desktop, Documents and Pictures.



Step #4. Go to C:\users\user\{Desktop,Documents,Pictuers} and move them to your new E:\OneDrive\{Desktop,Documents,Pictuers}




Step #5. Run a test, using Quick access area, create a test file on the desktop folder.





Step #6. Now, go to E:\OneDrive\Desktop and verify that the file is really there




Step #7. Ensure the right folders are checked to Sync




Step #8. Optionally untick the Files on Demand feature to make 100% sure that the files are actually stored on your hard drive.





Seems pretty easy to me.

 

Is OneDrive the worst Microsoft product ever?

I was obliged to bring my desktop in to a computer tech repair shop for an unrelated matter. They dealt with the matter effectively but after a few weeks I realized that "my pictures" and "my documents" had been defaulted by Windows to OneDrive. Without any action from me they were moved from my default location on my D Drive (HDD) to my C Drive (SSD) and the Cloud under OneDrive. When I tried to correct the issue Windows refused to allow me to move my files back to my chosen location that had been working fine for over two years. This had a cascading effect on my programs (e.g. Lightroom Classic) that can no longer locate its catalogue for backup and retrieval. After losing about 6 hours trying to rectify this problem myself I am obliged to bring the machine back to the shop that helped me in the first place. I have been using Microsoft products since the company began operating and this is by far the worst, most useless, most frustrating and most invasive product I have ever seen the company force upon us. I had a similar issue with this junk last year when I set up a laptop, but because it was a secondary machine and I was not moving over my primary files to it I was able to disable OneDrive with a minimum of frustration; but it still took me considerable time and effort to accomplish. I don't need an answer to this post, but I just wanted to add my voice to the very long list of people who are apparently as disgusted as I am with this product. If Microsoft did not have such a stranglehold on the OS world for those of us who do not like Apple I would walk away from Windows and the company in a heartbeat over this disaster.

 

Windows 10 - OneDrive

Right click on the app and one of the properties has an option to not automatically start it. Uncheck, restart the computer, and it should stop. If you want to go another step further, find the OneDrive app in the start menu, right click on it and uninstall.
