Re-claim Free Space in Storage Spaces Volume

I have a Win10 machine with 1x 500GB SSD (boot drive) and 3x 3TB HDD. I have storage spaces set up for the HDDs and have noticed that any deleted data in the volume does not change "usage" according to storage spaces. Now it says my volume is full despite
having only ~5TB on it. I have linked screenshots of my output where relevant.

How do I get my free space back?

Here is what I tried already after a lot of searching and nothing has worked:

    • Optimize Volume via the GUI (0% trimmed; 99% efficiency) - No Changes
    • Optimize-Volume Slab Consolidation
    • Optimize-Volume Defrag
      • ERROR - Volume Full (I deleted 40GB worth of data and still got a "volume full" error)
      • I tried this defrag manually before the drive was "full" and it ran the defrag but I didnt get any space back
    • Chkdsk
    • Empty Recycle bin, restart, etc.

Is there anything I can do short of deleting the volume and starting over?

Can I prevent in the future? Because if this is just the nature of Storage Spaces they won't work for me.

Storage Spaces not showing increased size..

Hello, Size was increased via storage spaces. I was able to fix the issue. It seems like size increase via storange spaces is not working. I manually have to reboot and then use following command to show the correct size.

    C:\ > DISKPART

    DISKPART> List Volume

DISKPART> select volume # (this is the number of the volume listed by the above ‘List Volume’ command)

    DISKPART> extend filesystem

    DISKPART> exit

This fixes the storage pool to show the correct size. But its really annoying to do that every time you increase the size of the pool.

    Thanks

Unallocated space not visible when I DISKPART>list disk/volume

    Hi, PopeLouis

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

The error message you're encountering during the Windows 10 installation process can be quite frustrating. When you encounter an error stating that a new partition couldn't be created, it's often related to the configuration of the disks or issues with the installation media. Here's what you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Check the Installation Media:Ensure that your installation media is not corrupted. You might want to create a new bootable USB using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft. If you're using a USB drive for installation, try using a different USB port or a different USB stick.
    2. Use DiskPart to Clean the Disk:
      • Boot from the Windows installation media and open the Command Prompt (usually by pressing Shift + F10).
      • Type diskpart and press Enter.
      • Type list disk and press Enter to show all disks.
      • Identify the disk you want to install Windows on (be very careful to select the correct one as the next steps will erase all data on the disk).
      • Type select disk X (replace X with the number of your disk) and press Enter.
      • Type clean and press Enter. This will remove all partitions and data from the selected disk.
      • After cleaning the disk, you can try creating a new partition using the Windows installer instead of DiskPart, as it should now be unallocated space.
    3. Create Partition via DiskPart:
      • If you still want to create the partition manually, after cleaning the disk, continue with these DiskPart commands:
      • Type create partition primary size=XXXXX (replace XXXXX with the size in MB you want for the Windows partition; if you want to use the entire disk, you can omit the size=XXXXX part).
      • Type format fs=ntfs quick to format the new partition.
      • Type active to mark the partition as active.
      • Type exit to leave DiskPart.
    4. BIOS Settings:
      • Ensure that the SATA mode is set correctly in your BIOS (AHCI is usually the preferred mode for modern systems).
      • Disable any RAID settings if they're not being used.
      • Check if there's a BIOS update available for your motherboard, as this can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
    5. Remove All Other Storage Devices: If you have any other storage devices connected to your computer (like a second hard drive or external USB drives), disconnect them during the installation process.
If none of these steps work, you may be dealing with a hardware issue with your disk, and it might need to be replaced. Always remember to back up any important data before attempting these steps, as they will erase all data on the disk.

If there is anything not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
