New Media creation tool only installs HOME (1709) ?????

    Hi there.

I've never had Home edition -- always PRO --however media creation tool always installs HOME edition even when I've downloaded the W10 PRO ISO. (1709)

Only fixed by restoring old W10 Pro (couple of builds back) and doing an Update.

What's up Ms -- surely of all things BASIC INSTALL SHOULD WORK !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ???????????????

Seems nobody knows how to test stuff these days before it's rushed out of the door.
Don't I.T depts. have any Q.C (Quality Control Inspection ) or whatever the equivalent is in I.T these days.

In Engineering defective stuff being released could cause DEATH. -- OK W10 isn't in that category but QC should still be around -- I've found once it works W10 is quite an OK product --but to get it working !!!!!.

I'm trying to refresh and clean install about 5 W10 PRO clients (all with proper Digital Licences) -- busy getting online sales up and running. I need W10 PRO as these need both English and Icelandic Language --W10 HOME doesn't support multi-languages which in my case is a 100% Mandatory requirement.

    Cheers
    jimbo.

    :)

  3. Version Upgrade

Should using the Media Creation Tool upgrade me from Windows 10 Home Edition OS build 1703 to 1709 10.0.16299.125 or 1709 10.0.16299.309?

When I did upgrade, it was to .125. This was after a clean installation because KB4088776 had failed to install six times.

Guess they're just trying to downgrade you...*chuckle

Just be grateful the next plane you fly in wasn't built by MS. It would probably stop flying while it was updating.

And I already know my next upgrade to the FCU will have to be by automatic update, 'cos I know a manual update will mean my disk numbers are reversed as seen by the CU & FCU when upgrading manually.

The ISO or USB made by the Media Creation Tool includes all these editions...

    [/quote] ISO of Single Language

If your PC's firmware holds an embedded key for 8/8.1 or 10 Home it will be picked up by the Setup and used to determine the edition to be installed. To get round this 'auto detect' so you can install Pro you need to modify the ISO before running Setup. See..

Installation does NOT ask for key during install

    Hi there
the last time I used the media creation tool (on the same set of PC's) it gave me an option as to what version of Windows to install.

That option on the install menu like it's disappeared --I've disabled the protected boot on these PC's so that shouldn;t be an issue --they came originally with HOME installed but were legally upgraded to W10 PRO for main reason of additional Languages needed.

That's your problem, the embedded Home key is being detected and used.

If your PC's firmware holds an embedded key for 8/8.1 or 10 Home it will be picked up by the Setup and used to determine the edition to be installed. To get round this 'auto detect' so you can install Pro you need to modify the ISO before running Setup. See..

On my computers that have no product keys embedded in BIOS/UEFI, the most current ISO created by MCT does give me the option of which version to install.

If you are installing from a USB flash drive, you can specify which version to install by creating a pid.txt file in the Sources folder of the USB flash drive containing:

    [PID]
    Value=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Replace the X's with the generic product key of the version of Windows 10 you want it to install. This will override the product key embedded in BIOS/UEFI.

Or, as stated in posts above, just let it install Home, and upgrade to Pro by changing the product key on the Activation Screen under settings to the Windows 10 Pro generic product key.

Create a text file EI.FG just containing following two lines.

    [CHANNEL]
    retail

Copy the ei.cfg file to sources folder on usb installation drive, and you will be prompted for version during installation.

Things have changed with FCU. You can no longer use generic key to convert Home to PRO, unless PC already has a digital licence for PRO.

If you have a key, you have to click on go to store, and under the buy PRO now button, there is a link "I have a PRO 10 key". You click on that and enter your key to upgrade.

  12. I've used a Retail (MSDN) key to upgrade from 10 Pro to 10 Pro for Workstations, didn't have to go to the store to do it. Just did a change product key. Like you mentioned, generic keys are a different matter now though. No uping the edition with one unless that Device already has a DL for the Edition your upgrading too.
