Windows 10: Network Switching from Private to Public

Hi folksI was on my husband's laptop to change a sound setting for him and while I was checking that other stuff was working ok, I found that the network was on Public instead of Private, which is where I had it set for him the last time I did maintenance for him, months ago. No idea how long it's been on Public. What would make the network change by itself? It is certainly not him as he wouldn't know how, What are the signs to alert him that the network is on Public, without having to go into the settings which he can't do and save me having to check hi

Change Network from Public to Private

I suggest you to follow the steps below to
change your network from Public to Private:

• 
  Type PowerShell in Search Window and then right click on it and click on
  Run as Administrator.
  
• 
  Type the following command to find your interface Index:
  Get-NetConnectionProfile
  
• 
  Use your interface index (for example 5) with this command:
  Set-NetConnectionProfile -InterfaceIndex 5 -NetworkCategory Private
  
• 
  Now reboot the device and check if the network has changed from Public to Private.

Windows 10 v1709 switches from Private to Public network

Hi Bruce,

It is possible that there is an issue with the network profiles of the computer and that can be the reason why the network always switches to Public network. We recommend that you delete all known network profiles to resolve the issue. To do this, follow
these steps:

• Open command prompt as administrator.
• In the command prompt window, type netsh wlan show profiles
  and press Enter.
• Type netsh wlan delete profile name=[ProfileName] and press Enter.
• Repeat the third step for the rest of network profiles you've seen after running the command in the second step.
• Check if the network will still switch to Public.

Missing option to switch from public to private network

Hello,

I am facing an issue to activate the connection to my LAN after an update of Windows 10.

The situation is the following:

- the connection options for both ethernet connection and wifi connection do not include anymore the option to switch to a private network.

- this implies that the router cannot see my PC and therefore is not getting an IP address and a gateway

- I have tried already to disable and enable the Ethernet driver,

- uninstall and reinstall the drivers, also using more update ones

- force a hard switch from public to private network through powershell commands

None of these actions are solving the problem.

I have not set a restore point and the "solve" options embedded in Windows 10 do not help (including restoring the connection).

I am still getting the message of non identified network, even if I succeeded in having the network appearing as "private" and not "public" as before.

Still no switch public/private appears in the menu.

What do you suggest?
