Dear Microsoft Support Team,I’m reaching out with a bit of a digital dilemma that’s been like a silent track on my system’s playlist. I’ve stumbled upon two folders, “$WINDOWS.~BT” and “$WinREAgent,” which seem to be outstaying their welcome in my storage space.After conducting my own research, I understand these folders are related to system updates. However, I’ve had my updates turned off since the vinyl records were in fashion or so it feels, and these folders date back to 14/09/2021. Fast forward to today, 17/06/2024, and they’re still here. The $WINDOWS.~BT folder is particularly hefty,

The Windows $BT folder is there in case you want to recover the old OS. It's not needed for an upgrade.

So about two weeks ago I deleted a $Windows~.BT folder (through the cmd). Now I know that was Windows 10 files ready for install.

How can I download it again? I'm sure I need to reinstall some update. But which?

If you are satisfied with how Windows 10 is performing, yes, it is safe to delete it.

FYI........... if you open $Windows.~BT > then open Sources folder > you will find an item called Install.esd.
Users like to use that to convert it to an ISO file which can be used for reinstall or burn it to a bootable media and use it to do a clean install.
You might want to save the Install.esd to an external hard drive for future use.
After that, feel free to delete $Windows.~BT .
You can delete it by running the built-in Disk Cleanup program.
