Windows 10: My colleague has died and i got his laptop - how do i change his device/MS registration to...

[Windows 11/HP Laptop 17-cn1xxx] I am a volunteer board member for a nonprofit. A fellow board member has died, and I was given his laptop, which was paid for by the organization.. I am generally a Mac user, so while i know the basics of using a PC, I don't understand the whole idea of Windows software vs Microsoft registration vs product keys and how its all linked. So forgive my ignorance and uninformed ramble. All I know is I can get into the laptop using a PIN number my friend had written down, but all authorizations must go to his email and phone which i don't have access to. I tried

Laptop display question

Confusing statement! You want to change the display on your laptop that died?

Is that correct?

How do you know its the display that's bad?

Just google "how to change display on a acer 5745"

Should get you to step by step instructions. But first make sure its the display that's bad

 

Odd change in MS account list of devices

I was just checking my list of devices in my MS account, and I noticed two od things.

1) My Hyper-V virtual machines are just listed generically as "virtual machines" whereas they always used to be listed as "Hyper-V virtual machines". I liked it that way so I could tell Hyper-V machines separately from VMWARE VMS.

2) One of my VMs is now still listed in my MS account, even though I changed it to a local account. Previously device was always removed if you changed from MSA to local account. This is a good move assuming it is a change, not a glitch as this means the digital licence link will be retained if you changed to a local account for any reason.

Yes, you can use the Microsoft account to register your lost laptop device, even if you did not create a Microsoft account when you bought the laptop in 2020. You can use the S/N (serial number) and model number to register with the new Microsoft account that you created.

Here are the steps on how to register your lost laptop device with a Microsoft account using the S/N and model number:

• Go to the Microsoft account | Devices website and sign in to your account.
  
• Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and select “View Microsoft account.”
  
• Click on the “Devices” tab.
  
• Click on the “Register a new device” button.
  
• Select “Laptop” as the device type.
  
• Enter the S/N and model number of your lost laptop.
  
• Click on the “Register” button.
  

Once you have registered your lost laptop device with your Microsoft account, you can use the “Find my device” feature to try to locate it.





Here are the steps on how to use the “Find my device” feature:

• Go to the Microsoft Account website and sign in to your account.
  
• Click on your profile picture in the top-right corner and select “View Microsoft account.”
  
• Click on the “Devices” tab.
  
• Find your lost laptop device in the list of devices and click on it.
  
• Click on the “Find my device” button.
  

If your lost laptop device is turned on and connected to the internet, the “Find my device” feature will show you its location on a map. You can also use the feature to remotely lock or wipe your device.

Note:

• If you are unable to find your lost laptop device using the “Find my device” feature, you can contact Asus customer support for assistance.
  
• You can also file a police report about your lost laptop device.
