On my HP laptop, I have an application called HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows that helps me in checking various components of my PC such as battery and AC Adapter. I use it for hitting up with the status of my device components so that I can check it and maintain my device components for as long as possible. I mostly use it for checking my battery status as the battery is a critical part of the system. I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps.

Testing and calibrating the battery using HP PC Diagnostics UEFI (preferred method)

• 
  Press and hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  
• 
  Turn on the computer and immediately press the
  F2 key repeatedly, about once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI menu is displayed.
  
• 
  Click Component Tests in the main menu.
  
• 
  In the list of Component Tests, click Battery
  
• 
  On the Battery Test, click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
  
• 
  The Battery Test takes about two minutes. The Battery Calibration, if needed, requires 2 to 4 hours. You can cancel at any time by pressing the
  Escape key (Esc).
  
• 
  When the testing is done, the first line on the Battery Check page displays the status or condition of the battery. If your battery passed, click
  Main Menu or click Battery Details for more information.
  
• 
  If your battery failed, check the table below for suggested actions. Then write down the battery status and Failure ID so you have it available if you need to contact HP Customer Support. This information is also available in the
  Test Logs on the UEFI main menu.
  

Note:
Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from
the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Battery icon shows 255% even when battery not installed

Click system tests > system extensive test > click run once (run the test overnight)
Next day perform component tests as needed (some are interactive).
For the component test to check the battery: click component tests > power > battery check

I have gone through a variety of troubleshooting steps, tests, diagnostics, etc both myself from tutorials and twice with HP techs on chat with remote access. Hours. Way more than I can list.
