    When I use my PC, mpcache in Microsoft defender folder increase size everyday. There is no threat history in windows security settings. I know I cannot safely delete mpcache. And how to reduce mpcache size?

    Hello,

    Occasionally, I will turn on my computer and it takes a very long time for anything to work.

    Check performance monitor and

    C:\$Mft (NTFS Master File Table)

    and

    there are may processes like this one:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\mpcache-8E3A95FB68F5E74F41E93DF6160C693FF730F8FE.bin.7E

    are making my HD access at 50% (it never goes higher than this), after about 15 minutes it subsides.

    I have turned off almost all the start up apps.

    Suggestions as to what is happening?

    Task Manager/Windows Processes/System - CPU Usage

    Deleting the database files worked for me but there is an easier way:

    1) Use group policy editor to Turn off Windows Defender (there are many links which show how to do this)
    2) Open a powershell as Admin (right click start menu to see this option quickly)
    3) Go to the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans directory
    4) Delete the mpengine* and mpcache* files
    5) re-enable via Group policy editor - those file will be recreated but it seems to solve the problem

    This fixed the CPU usage issue for me - it was using constantly about 35% CPU for me slowing everything down. Now it usually 1 or 2 % CPU...

    You can also skip group-policy: Just open Windows Defender Security Center and disable Realtime-Protection. The rest's still the same.
