Windows 10: Moved Location of 3D Objects folder, now points to clone? of Windows folder

Was attempting to remove 3D Objects folder as it is empty and useless to me. Did the following stepsrocedure:1. Right click 3D Objects folder2. Click Properties3. Click "Location" tab4. Click "Move" button5. Select C:/Windows as new folder location6. Click 3D Objects folder in sidebar again because it did not disappear as hoped7. Saw 3D Objects folder populate with all of files/folders seen in Windows folder8. Cursed and restarted computer9. Upon opening file explorer, viewed 3D Objects folder is now renamed to WindowsInstead I have a new folder with a complete copy... or possibly just a poi

3D Objects folder

No, fortunately, it's not that serious.

My user folder is still intact and everything works OK. Its just that it has the '3D Objects' label assigned to it.

For instance, in explorer view it displays as 3D Objects but when I click the address bar the full path displays correctly as C:\users\<username>. There is no functional impact just an annoyance. In the unlikely event that I use
Paint 3D or Mixed Reality Viewer at some point my user folder may become untidy with 3D Object files.

I moved 3D Objects via it's properties location tab. However, this will no longer allow me to relocate it saying
Can't move the folder because there is a folder in the same location which cannot be redirected. Access is denied. I get the same message where ever I try to move it.

 

User shell folders messed up after using move location tab on 3D Objects folder. DaveM121 please help!

Hi Dave,

1. No I did not move my user folder. Only Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Music and Videos to E:\users\hilton. There still remains a C:\users\hilton folder.

This was done years ago using the properties location tab method and working fine. Today I needed to save space on C: so I moved 3D Objects to E:\users\hilton and that's when it messed things up - using the change location tab on 3D Objects properties it transferred all 3D Objects files and folders into E:\users\hilton not a new subfolder within. Worse thought is the fact that Explorer now shows the only content of E:\users\hilton as a special older called 3D Objects with all contents as before plus 3d Objects. To be fair the messup may have got worse since I used the location tab again to try and restore 3D objects to default but without moving files. I was given a message that it did not exist and I allowed it to create - that's when the links for Pictures a etc started going awry.

2. I have now moved the 3D files and folders manually to a new folder at the root of E:. The desired situation is for user shell folders 3D Objects to point to this new location and for the shell folders Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Videos and Music to point to their respective folders in E:\users\hilton as before. Plus I need explorer to show correctly E:\users\hilton rather than E:\users\3D Objects.

3. Current locations for folders under This PC by Explorer shown by properties are:

3D Objects = C:\Users\hilton ( I want this to be E:\3D Objects)

Desktop = C:\Users\hilton OK

Documents = C:\Users\hilton\3D Objects (this should be E:\users\hilton\documents)

Downloads = C:\Users\hilton\3D Objects (this should be E:\users\hilton\documents)

Music =C:\Users\hilton\3D Objects (this should be E:\users\hilton\documents)

Pictures = C:\Users\hilton\3D Objects (this should be E:\users\hilton\documents)

Videos = C:\Users\hilton\3D Objects (this should be E:\users\hilton\documents)

The entries for Contacts, Saved games and so on seem ok but are not listed - I guess because I never use them.

BTW the Quick access link for Documents still works pointing to and opening E:\users\hilton\documents

3D Objects Icon used for moved User folder

I have successfully moved the User files (ie) C:\Users\[UserName] to a data drive D:\User by using the Location tab on each individual folder (ie) Pictures, Music etc I then right clicked the D:\User folder itself and chose Customize to choose an icon for it. I reluctantly chose the 3D Objects icon. the User folder took on the 3D Objects icon. All was good, but after a reboot, the User folder changed names to 3D Objects. I have renamed 3D Objects back to User, and changed the icon to something different. The name change and Icon sticks in the root of D:\ but the icon in the Quick Access list is still 3D Objects, but not the User folder name, which is still User, the new icon shows in D:\ After a reboot or 2 the icon and the folder name changes to 3D Objects again. And I have to rename it again and choose a different Icon. Is there a way to stop this?
