Windows 10: Mirkat app and service - nasty or nice?

I have a Lenovo PC running Windows 10, Defender fully enabled.


Yesterday an app call MIRKAT appeared alongside the Lenovo logo, purporting to be part of the Lenovo app family. It offers an alert service whenever a nominated email address has been compromised. What followed was an email verification procedure. I became suspicious when the app opened: it listed well-known recent security breaches at major online services, recommending a click-through for recommended actions, according to whether (according to Mirkat) the nominated email address or password had been at risk on that site. At that point I deleted the app, without having clicked through at all, ran a full Defender Scan, followed by a Defender Offline Scan. Both reported okay - though curiously the Offline Scan didn't take 15 minutes, just about 4.


Mirkat.com has a one-page website, apparently credible in itself, but a single page is odd for a significant service. A Google search comes up with nothing either, good or bad. Lots for MEERkat, but nothing whatsoever for MIRkat.


The only thing I have noticed 24 hours on, is that flicking the Ransomware switch on appeared to block Outlook.exe this morning, which I would not have expected.


Does anyone know about this MIRKAT? Anything to worry about? Any other super-safe actions should now be taken?

My pc takes for ever to shut down when i restart

Suggest cleaning up your startup list .There may be many services / Apps you can remove on startup which is not needed on boot or during shutdown.
Before you shutdown the Pc check what is running in Task Manager as a program or service in not killing the process on shutdown

Would suggest cleaning up running apps and services -Autoruns, StartupMonitor,HighjackThis,
Malware Scan - Malwarebytes,ADWcleaner, Combofix

 

Edit Services "Description" field


As title suggests, I'm wondering how to edit the description of services that appear in "services.msc"... I have several programs that run as services that I know and use, but have no descriptions at all.

Would be nice to be able to see these and immediately recognize them when viewing list of running services.

Mail app will not open on 10041.

This is the suggested solution below if you haven't already tried it.

In this Windows 10 build 10041, the Mail, Calendar, and People apps may be broken due to a licensing issue with the Store Beta. To get these apps working again, you need to follow these steps:

• Open powershell as administrator
• Run the command Get-appxprovisionedpackage –online | where-object {$_.packagename –like “*windowscommunicationsapps*”} | remove-appxprovisionedpackage –online
• Re-install Mail, People and Calendar from the Store (green tile)
