Windows 10: Middle mouse button drag with the touchpad

Good morning,

This might be an age old question but I need to find a way to perform this if I dont have a mouse with the notebook.

CAD software traditionally use middle button drag for panning a drawing sheet or rotating the 3D model.

Currently the left button drag mode can be selected to a right click menu but this is would be too cumbersome.

What could be appropriate:

- actually use the 3 finger drag for simulating the middle mouse button drag

- holding down a key would enable middle button drag with one finger

- keys to quickly switch between left button drag operation in the CAD sotfware (Solidworks)

In most CAD software there is touchscreen mode, which allows the rotation of the model, but I dont have a touchscreen, only Windows 10 style touchpad (dell precision 5550)

X-windows middle-mouse button using touchpad on Windows 10

Cygwin is the only unix environment of which I know that works on top of Windows. I am getting frequent reminders to move from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It doesn't make sense to migrate my 2011 laptop with stuck keys to Windows 10, so I've been investigating current day laptops. I haven't bought one yet, but have messed around with display models at stores.

In Windows 10, one can specify that a 3-finger tap as representing the tap of the middle mouse button. Unfortunately, it is only a tap, and not a click-and-hold. X-windows requires the emulation of all possible uses of the middle button: Tap, click-and-hold, either of those two in conjunction with Shift and/or Control, and either one of the preceding modes in conjuction with a drag. For example, xterm customization menus require some of these.

In Windows 7, I achieve this by mapping the left physical button to the desired middle button. I don't need the physical left button to behave as a left button because left button functionality can be emulated with touch pad taps and drags by enabling the following Synaptics's switches:

• Tap again and hold to drag
  
• Locking Drags
  

Other limitations:

• I avoid carrying extra accessories like a mouse because without a doubt, I will not have it when I need it
  
• Many laptops don't have explicit buttons, but allow lower left/right corners to be clicked. This prevents the emulation of middle button by clicking both left and right, which isn't a good option anyway because (I'm guessing that) it also doesn't allow for simultaneous drag.

• How have other Cygwin users obtained middle mouse button functionality in Windows 10?
  
• Is Synaptics compatible with Windows 10
  
• Will it accomplish what I describe above with Windows 7?
  

 

Precision Touchpad Middle Mouse Hold Drag

Hi Everyone,

I am new to using a Precision Touchpad. I switched over from a touchpad with a Synaptics Driver. I am using a Dell Laptop and the Dell support says this is a Windows Driver issue because they just use the Windows Drivers.

I often use my computer for CAD drafting. This function uses a lot of middle mouse wheel functions to pan around the screen. On my old computer, I could set part of the track pad as a middle mouse click and hold function. It would allow me to click, hold,
and pan around the screen. On my new Precision Touch Pad, I have mapped a three finger tap as a middle mouse click. But, there is no option to "HOLD" the click down. Is there a way to enable this "HOLD" function?

FYI, I am using AutoHotKey to remap my left mouse click as a middle click hold, but it is a clunky solution. Does anyone know a way to enable this "HOLD" function for a three finger tap on the Precision Touchpad?

How to use Middle Mouse button tap on a Laptop?

Hi, it seems remarkably awkward to emulate clicking a mouse scroll wheel with a touchpad. I tried what hdmi suggested above without success.

This may vary from PC to PC as there are so many touchpad and touchpad driver variants.

Here's how I've just succeeded in doing it using Autohotkey (which has to be installed to use run the ahk file) (Google, free).

a. Create a file such as
Middleclick.ahk
containing
Mouseclick, m

b. Create a shortcut to it
c. Assign a keyboard hot key combo to it e.g. CTRL ALT J
d. In Settings, go to Advanced Gesture Configuration
e. Configure the custom shortcut option as CTRL ALT J




f. Try it. Somewhat to my surprise it worked first time.

Note: you can compile the ahk file to produce an exe file (rt click the ahk file, click Compile).


Note: my dedicated touchpad middle button behaves differently to clicking my mouse scroll wheel and does nothing useful, although somewhat like clicking the scroll wheel an icon appears with an up and down arrow, but quite different.
