Windows 10: lusrmgr.msc - This snapin may not be used with this edition of Windows

Hi, I upgraded my Windows 10 Home to Pro, and Pro to Edu, but still getting this error.

I have tried to add Local users and Group in mmc.exe, but still no luck.

I had also enabled all Windows features in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features

What am I missing?

My computer is a ThinkPad X1 YOGA

Hi Johnson,

Based on the screenshot you gave, you are trying to edit some policies of the
Local Group Policy Editor. The Local Group Policy Editor is only available for
Windows 10 Pro. If you are using Windows 10 Home, you may need to upgrade to
Windows 10 Pro in order to access the Local Group Policy.

Same. I was able to use "net user" from an elevated command prompt to add another local user account. The issue is that now I cannot properly grant administrative rights to domain accounts.

I did a fresh install of the 1607 version of Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool. Since my PC (Acer Aspire S7) was originally delivered with the Windows 8 Home edition by the OEM (and later upgraded to Windows 8 Pro), the Home edition of Windows 10 is once more installed. I then upgraded to Windows 10 Pro by using the default product key as explained at How to troubleshoot Product Activation in Windows 10 - Microsoft Community.

The upgrade at first looked ok - the Activation panel in Settings says I have Windows 10 Pro and that Windows is activated. But, it seems this is only half of a Pro version. I did successfully join a domain and at the logon screen I am suggested to log on to this domain, but, I cannot - when trying, the error message states that "The user name or password is incorrect" which of course is incorrect. I have the same problem starting the 'Local Users and Groups' MMC snapin getting the 'This snapin may not be used with this edition of Windows 10" error. So in essence, I have a Windows 10 Home Edition naming itself Windows 10 Pro Edition.

 

Had virtually the identical scenario, has anyone found the cause or a solution?

 

Try to press Windows logo key + R and type control userpasswords2 in the Run box, then hit Enter. From the pop up window, you can do almost all things you can do in lusrmgr.msc.

 

If upgrade from Home to Pro isn't working you could clean install and force installation of Pro.

Put an ie.cfg file in the Sources directory of your install USB. Windows Setup Edition Configuration and Product ID Files (EI.cfg and PID.txt)

For example:

Code: [EditionID] Professional [Channel] Retail [VL] 0[/quote]
Then skip entering product key. Assuming 10 Pro was already activated on that device it will activate OK.
