Live captions - how to get with insider account?

Thanks Elise. I had actually checked for updates before joining the insider program and none were available, but since then the 22H2 update did show up - so I've completed that step, hoorah! But step two, enabling the captions, is not happening. The live captions option does now show up in 'accessibility' and I have turned it on, but then when it comes to downloading the captions I've been trying for 3 days now and I am just stuck with a box that says 'setting up live captions' with a a sliding blue line (whatever you call that - like download in progress, but it doesn't show where the download is at). I left it running the whole day and nothing is happening. I don't think it's my connection as it's working fine for other things. Any suggestions??

Customizing the live captions window doesn't work

I can also verify the problem. I have tried customising the live captions so that:

    • Text is 100% opacity
    • Background is 0% opacity
    • Window is 0% opacity.
Captions appear correct in the theme preview, however:

    • The actual floating caption window is not transparent,
    • The background is literally 100% opacity black,
    • and the text is 100% opacity.

It's as if I was using the default theme.

Windows 11 Live Caption for phone calls

    Hello ,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Theoretically, Windows Live Caption can do what you want. But the following prerequisites need to be met:

    • Windows 11, version 22H2 and later. You can check it by pressing Win + X > System > Windows specifications, click “Copy” and paste it in your next reply.
    • The first time you use it, you will need internet support to download the corresponding language pack resources.
    • Live captions supports speech recognition in:
      • Chinese (Simplified, China)
      • Chinese (Traditional, Hong Kong SAR)
      • Chinese (Traditional, Taiwan)

To turn on live captions, do one of the following:

    • Turn on the Live captions toggle in the quick settings Accessibility flyout. (To open quick settings, select the battery, network, or volume icon on the taskbar.)
    • Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + L.
    • Select Start > All apps > Accessibility > Live captions.
    • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions, and turn on the Live captions toggle.

    Personalize how captions are displayed

    1. Select the Settings button in the live captions window.
    2. Select Position.
    3. Choose either Top, Bottom, or Floating on screen.
      • When you choose Top or Bottom, the captions window will appear as docked to the top or bottom screen edges in reserved space on your desktop, and other apps will not be blocked by the captions window.
When docked to the top, you might find that live captions works well while sharing video in a virtual meeting or conversation, whereas in other cases, such as viewing videos, docking to bottom might work best.
      • When you choose Floating on screen, the live captions will appear in an overlay window which you can reposition as needed to avoid obscuring other apps in use.

    Make captions easier to read

    1. Select the Settings button in the live captions window.
    2. Select Preferences.
    3. Select Caption style. The Accessibility settings for Captions opens.
    4. Under Caption style, do one of the following:
      • Select a built-in style from the dropdown menu. Use the Default built-in style to have captions displayed with colors appropriate to your device’s dark or light mode setting in Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode.
      • Select the Edit button to create a custom style that works best for you.
