Windows 10: Keyboard USB on desktop PC stops working when laptop is turned on.

The USB plug-in keyboard for the desktop PC stops working when a laptop under the same Microsoft account is turned on. Both devices are couple of years old and problem only recently started.A replacement keyboard has been tried and drivers updated including uninstalling and re-installing on desktop. This conflict still occurs when no programs running on the laptop, bas soon laptop is powered off, the keyboard magically works no PC restart needed or anything Running Windows 10 on both devices, with outlook for same account on both. There is no file sharing software set up and not networke

Keyboard waking desktop PC

I would walk down the list of USB devices in Device Manager and disable them all from being able to wake up the PC until it stops waking up by USB, then you can start enabling and taking notes to find the culprit *Wink See my post in your other thread too.

 

Windows Major Update KB4040724 - now desktop does not respond to the USB keyboard

Just installed Major Update KB4040724 - now desktop does not respond to the USB keyboard.

At first, I had no control via both USB mouse and USB keyboard. Did some research and did the following ...

1. disconnected both mouse & keyboard...

2. used power button to power off the desktop...

3. unplugged the power cord...held down the desktop START button for 30-seconds...

4. plugged in the power cord...started the computer...

5. plugged in the wireless mouse USB "antenna"...desktop apparently reloaded the mouse driver...mouse now working.

6. plugged in the keyboard USB cord to USB outlet ... desktop reloaded the driver...

7. ...and allowed me to type about 8 letters... then stopped.

I repeated steps 1-6... no response or control with the keyboard.

I repeated steps 1-6... plugged in a different USB keyboard... no control or response from the keyboard.

External USB-keyboard connected to laptop stops working

We have created a Windows 10 Build 1607 image, that we deploy to computers using MDT.

The image have been deployed to two different laptop models (HP and Lenovo) and several desktops. On some of our laptops we see that the external keyboards stops working. We have made some observations so far, that might indicate that the problem has to
do with a windows update which installs a second keyboard driver in the driverstore.

We have observed the following in the computers where the keyboard doesn't work.

• There is no HID Keyboard in device manager even though the keyboard is plugged in (USB).
• There is a PS/2 Keyboard in the device manager, if we look in the log for the keyboard we can see a change in the driver around the time it stopped working. In some cases it tries to use a oem7.inf file which has nothing to do with keyboards
• There is no light in "NumLock", "CapsLock" or "ScrollLock" if they are used when connected to the computer
• We can see the name of the keyboard in Windows 10 under "Connected devices" and a USB driver is installed when we plug in the keyboard, but no keyboards are added in the device manager (we have also tried to look for hidden devices)
• Just after the installation of the image, there is only one keyboard driver in Windows\System32\DriverStore after we run Windows update, we get a second keyboard driver in the driverstore. This happens both through WSUS and Windows Update.
• For all the computers with the error there is no .inf file in the "old" folder for the keyboard driver and no keyboard.inf in the Windows/INF folder
• It looks like update KB4015438 installs the second keyboard driver through Windows Update.

So far the only way to get the USB-keyboards to work again have been to reinstall the computer, but updates add the second keyboard driver again and the issue might appear again.

Does anybody have any good solutions for this problem?
