Windows 10: Keyboard is Japanese, input method is Japanese, but when typing, the US English keyboard...

I acquired a notebook with Japanese keyboard and reinstalled Windows 10. From the beginning, the installation process was in Japanese; as a result, Windows is exclusively in Japanese, and the only input method configured is Japanese. This is as expected and desired.However, when I type something, the US English keyboard layout is used. For example, when hitting the "@" key, which is next to "P" on the Japanese keyboard, the open square bracket is typed. When hitting Shift-2, "@" appears instead of the expected double-quote. Switching Japanese Windows with English menus

Yes, I do mean those keys. I tried just switching to Japanese keyboard, as you suggested, but those keys didn't work. Also, the selection key is normally the spacebar in Japan but I could only get IME to work with the Tab key (for those who aren't familiar with Japanese typing: you type in Roman characters, then press a selection key and it steps you through a list of options for the word you are typing in Japanese characters). Did you get the special keys to work as they do in native Japanese mode?

It may well be that I was missing something, although I did try every option I could think of. In any event, as I said, I gave in and now have Japanese Windows running with English menus and everything seems to be working perfectly.

Want English language system with Japanese IME keyboard

Hi Divya,

while trying the method as you suggested, I could choose English as the display language,

but then when I am trying to add the input method, it does not show Microsoft IME as an option in the list.

at best I can only see/choose Japanese keyboard, but then the layout is different.

I am using a Toshiba dynabook KIRA, and my base OS is Japanese windows 8.1 which I upgraded to win 10.

 

How can I use the Japanese IME (Input Method Editor) with a non-English keyboard?

The Japanese IME (Input Method Editor) for Windows 10 appears to only offer the option of selecting the Standard English or Standard Japanese keyboard layouts. This is a big problem for users of non-English (and non-Japanese) keyboards since many keys (such
as z and y, dashes and brackets etc) are then in the wrong place, i.e. the character interpreted by the IME does not correspond to the character shown on and typed in with the keyboard.

Many international users of this forum have asked the same question
(many in German) over the years - yet I am unable to find a fix that works for Windows 10. (Use of the on-screen keyboard with a mouse is not really satisfactory for efficient typing)
