Windows 10: KB5034441 Failed --- WinRE

It turns out that this patch Tuesday 1/9/2024 one of my update failed. KB5034441 with error code 0x80070643. – the issue could be that the recovery partition WinRE does not have enough space for the update There is MS solution to this issue involves diskpart and reagentc — which involves shrinking, deleting and recreating partitions and formatting the created partition I am not convertible with this manual process, so would using a third party partitioning program that has a GUI interface to shrink and expand the existing partitions preserve the existing proprieties that the mnaul proce

Windows 10 22h2 security update [KB5034441] fails to install with code: 0x80070643

I just started running into this, and there's this blurb in the description of the update:

IMPORTANT

Some computers might not have a recovery partition that is large enough to complete this update. Because of this, the update for WinRE might fail. In this case, you will receive the following error message:

• Windows Recovery Environment servicing failed.
  (CBS_E_INSUFFICIENT_DISK_SPACE)
  

To help you recover from this failure, please follow Instructions to manually resize your partition to install the WinRE update.

Known issue Because of an issue in the error code handling routine, you might receive the following error message instead of the expected error message when there is insufficient disk space:

• 0x80070643 - ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE

I tried the process of resizing the recovery partition and ran into an interesting error when I tried to re-enable it. Windows reported it can't enable it while Bitlocker is enabled.

So I'm wondering if this patch to fix a Bitlocker-related vulnerability requires Bitlocker to be disabled and the device decrypted before it will work.

Thoughts?

 

Windows Update KB5034441 Fails with 0x80070643

Hi I just got a Windows update KB5034441 today that fails with 0x80070643. Is there an easier way to resize the recovery partition other than as per here perhaps with a GUI? The recovery partition having insufficient space causes the failure correct?

These are correct steps to take and have solved other update issues for me. However, there is another necessary step to try before resorting to the in-place upgrade, and that's clearing the update cache and forcing a fresh download of failing updates. This has help me with other updates.

However, none of these steps are helping today with KB5034441.

From the system log:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8024200B: 2024-01 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441).

Keep in mind, if enough people are having trouble with an update, Microsoft usually supersedes it with a working update fairly quickly (that's the case where clearing cache and redownloading seems to be most helpful). I'll wait for a couple weeks before resorting to an upgrade in-place.
