KB5029244 released on 8/8/23 update breaks remote desktop connections

Hi vbpete01, as an Independent Ambassador and Microsoft user, I'd be happy to assist with the issue related to KB5029244 breaking remote desktop connections on your Windows 10 Pro machine. It's awesome that you've pinpointed the problem to the update, and here are some more troubleshooting steps we can try:

    1. Confirm That You've Uninstalled the Update Properly:

    - Go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update."

    - Click on "View update history" > "Uninstall updates."

    - Select the update labeled with KB5029244 and click "Uninstall."

    - Restart your computer and check if the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) is working again.

    2. Check for a New Update that Fixes the Issue:

    - Microsoft may release an update to fix this issue, so make sure to regularly check for updates in "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update" > "Check for updates."

    3. Use System Restore to Roll Back to a Previous State:

    - If uninstalling the update didn't help, you can try to restore your system to a point before the update was installed.

    - Search for "Create a restore point" in the Start menu.

    - Click on "System Restore" and follow the prompts to choose a restore point.

    4. Provide Feedback to Microsoft:

    - Since this seems to be a known issue with the update, make sure to report it using the Feedback Hub app on your system to help Microsoft address it.

    5. Configure Group Policy to Prevent the Update from Being Reinstalled:

    - If you find that the update gets reinstalled automatically, you can use the Group Policy Editor to block it temporarily.

    - Type `gpedit.msc` in the search bar and press Enter.

    - Navigate to "Computer Configuration" > "Administrative Templates" > "Windows Components" > "Windows Update" > "Windows Update for Business."

    - Double-click on "Select the target Feature Update version" and set it to the version you want to stay on.

Note: The last step is a temporary solution and should be reversed once a fix for the issue is available, as staying on an older version might prevent you from receiving important security updates.

Please let me know if this resolves your issue. KB5029244 released on 8/8/23 update breaks remote desktop connections :)

KB5029244 released on 8/8/23 update breaks remote desktop connections

Remote desktop in window 10 cannot access computer having windows 8

No, it's the other way round all editions include the Remote Desktop Client and can connect to any PC with the Remote Desktop Server enabled. Only Pro and above allow you to connect to them.

Enable or Disable Remote Desktop Connections to Windows 10 PC

    https://docs.microsoft.com/windows-s...#supported-pcs

maideen5's region is Malaysia, English may not be their first language. As I understand it the OP's problem can be stated as:

    • The Windows 10 PC can connect to the remote desktop of a PC running Windows Server 2012, but cannot connect to a Windows 8.1 PC.
    • A Windows 7 PC can connect to both, so the Windows 8.1 PC is known to allow incoming connections.

I don't have an 8.1 Pro machine, so I can't test this for myself. @Kari wrote the tutorial on this, perhaps he has a suggestion.

    Edit: see post #10
