    IST External Drive makes noise when laptop is shutting down - Windows update related?


    This began a few days ago, briefly disappeared, and is now happening again. drive was purchased in early 2023, so not too oldAnytime my laptop shuts down, the external drive makes a click noise that sounds like someone tapping their fingernail against a small piece of metal; the same happens when it's unplugged from the cable or ejected normally. Not sure if I should be concerned. but does not make the noise when it automatically turns off when not in use when the laptop is onThere are no odd noises when the drive is actively in use, the lights on it are flashing normally, and opening its fi

    • Just to confirm, the device that is not working properly is a external DVD optical drive?
    • Were there any recent changes or updates installed on your computer?
    • Have you tried to plug the external drive to a different port on your computer?

    As a initial recommendation, we suggest that your run the built in troubleshooter in Windows 10. Kindly refer to the steps below:

    • Type “Troubleshooting” in the Search bar and press Enter.
    • Click on “View All” in the top left corner.
    • This will display the list of troubleshooters which are built-in in the computer. You can click on
      Hardware and Devices from the list and you can run the troubleshooter.
