Installing Windows 10 to a Separate Drive

    Hello.

First, my apologies for not being fluent in English.

I want to install Windows 10 Pro to a separate drive. Currently I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (6.3 Build 9600) in one drive. Let's call the Windows 8.1 Pro drive Sabrent A, and the drive I want to install Windows 10 Pro Sabrent B.

Both drives are GPT, with Windows 8.1 Pro installed as UEFI OS.

My first attempt to install Windows 10 Pro resulted in a disaster. I disconnected all drives, connected Sabrent B and with only Sabrent B and Windows installation media connected to the system, I proceeded with Windows 10 installation. The system files and features can be copied or installed without an issue, and when the installation process asked me to reboot, I let it rebooted itself after 10 seconds. After reboot and the installation process continued, not long after I got a message about error and I must restart the installation. I did the installation process again and the same thing happened.

After several failures, I stopped installing and decided to find assistance online. I connected all drives again, set the boot priority to Sabrent A and after the Windows logo and the loading dots appeared, I noticed that my screen went black. The login screen did not appear and not long after that, my system rebooted automatically.

I went to BIOS to check the boot priority and I saw nothing wrong. The first boot priority was set to Windows Boot Loader. However I could not login to Windows 8.1 Pro. The login screen would not appear and the system always rebooted before the login screen had a chance to appear.

Currently I have managed to login to my Windows 8.1 Pro by repairing the boot files using Macrium Rescue with only Sabrent A connected. The Windows 8.1 Pro OS was not damaged because Sabrent A was disconnected before I installed Windows 10 to Sabrent B. I also took time to format the EFI system partition in Sabrent B to wipe it properly before I repaired the boot files of my Windows 8.1 Pro.

I would like to ask several questions regarding my failed attempts to install Windows 10 to a separate drive.

    1. Did I do something wrong? Was there a mistake or did I forgot something when I was installing Windows 10?

    2. Is there a proper and safe way to install Windows 10 Pro to Sabrent B without affecting or damaging the boot or system files of my Windows 8.1 Pro? Please remember that I have removed Sabrent A from the system before I installed Windows 10 to Sabrent B, and yet the boot files of my Windows 8.1 Pro in Sabrent A was affected or damaged.

    3. Is using WinToHDD a good way to install Windows 10 without affecting or damaging the boot and system files of my Windows 8.1 Pro?

    4. My drives are GPT. To prevent any more problem, is it possible to install Windows 10 to Sabrent B in Legacy instead of UEFI?

If there is another or different opinion or suggestion, please tell me. I would like to hear it.

Thank you very much for the assistance.
My apologies for any misspelling or grammatical error and the very long explanation.

    :)
