Today I turned on my computer, and Windows updated itself. When it asks for my PIN, it says it's incorrect and won't let me log in—it seems to be wrong. When I select the "I forgot my PIN" option, Windows tries to open the window to change the PIN, but it doesn't succeed. After a few failed attempts, it tells me to type the code A1B2C3 to keep trying. But since I can't, I have to restart the computer.I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, but it still doesn't let me in. I have important data and need to work. I can't afford to stay stuck with this issue for long.

    :)

  2. CHANGING the pin on the lockscreen without hitting "forgot pin"

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand the concern as you want to change the PIN to login to the PC. Yes you are right,
"Windows Hello PIN" is same as the pin you use to unlock the computer and
from lock screen we can only reset the PIN using Forgot Pin option. In order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below:

    • What is the Version and Build of Windows 10 installed on the PC? (Type
      winver
      in Windows search/Run command)
    • What is the make and model number of the PC?
    • How do you login to the PC? (PIN/Password)

As you are not seeing the Change Pin option in Account Settings, we can try and reset the NGC folder after which you can setup a new PIN.

    1. Sign-in to your Windows 10 Administrator account using password.
    2. Now; open your File Explorer and browse to the location:
      C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft
    3. Right click on the NGC folder and select
      Properties from the context menu.
    4. Under the "Security" tab, click on "Advanced" option.
    5. From the following window, next to the Owner section, click on the "change" link.
    6. Under the Enter the object name to select option, input
Administrators if you are using administrator account, or the local user name.
    7. Click on Check Names and then
      OK
      .
    8. Once you have followed all these steps, you should be able to enter
NGC folder. Delete all the files from the folder
    9. After removing contents of the NGC folder, add a
PIN by following the path: Click on Start Menu > Settings app > Account Settings> Sign-in Options> Add a
      PIN.

If you are still unable to fix the issue by resetting the NGC folder, then perform these methods

Method 1: Using Registry settings if you have Windows 10 Home installed

If you are on Windows 10 Home edition, you can change the registry settings to enable PIN sign-in option for all users.

    1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key and the R key together.
    2. Type Regedit and hit the Enter key.
    3. When the Registry Editor opens, navigate to the following location:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PolicyManager\default\Settings\AllowSignInOptions.
    4. In the right pane, double click on the DWORD entry named value set it to
      1.

Method 2: Using Group policy settings if you have Windows 10 Pro installed.

If you are on Windows 10 Pro edition, you can change the group policy settings to enable PIN sign-in option for all users.

    1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows key and the R key together.
    2. Type GPEDIT.MSC and hit the Enter key.
    3. Go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Logon.
    4. On the right side, double click on Turn on PIN sign-in and select
      Enable.
    5. Similarly disable the other Windows Hello options if any.
    6. Exit the Group policy editor and reboot the computer.

Let us know the results. If the issue persists, we will certainly assist you further.

  3. Forgot pin on windows 11

    Hi,

I have forgotten my pin on my Windows 11 laptop. I am not signed in. The instructions on windows support are the following:

    • If you don't see I forgot my PIN, select Sign-in options and then select Enter your password.
But I don't have the Sign-in options link. I think I have tried to enter my pin too many times and now I need to enter a security question, (A1B2C3). I enter the security question but can't get past this point. Is there anyway around this?

    Thanks

    Dan.

  4. I select the "I forgot my PIN" option, Windows tries to open the window to change the PIN,...

Forgot PIN, no other login options

I lost the PIN for a Windows laptop. When I hit "forgot my PIN" the screen said "just a moment" and had a spinning circle. It stayed that way for about 10 minutes, then there was a popup that said "you must download an app from the Store to complete this request". When I returned to the login screen, I tested a number of PINs that were incorrect, and now there is no "forgot my PIN" option. There was never an option to sign in with a password listed.
