Windows 10: I have a nasty time with thumbnails coming and going!!??!

I have a Dell Optiplex 3050. SSDIt's been ongoing since I got it refurb from Amazon that the thumbnails keep disappearing for the icon. I have tried using different programs to see if maybe it was Irfanview's issue. But it still seems to misbehave. I have gone into the Registry and changed the MaxIconsCache to a greater number. I have used Windows Clean Disk. I have used settings to make sure it uses thumbnails and not icons. I have gone into View Advanced System Settings to make sure several checks are there. It's purely a stressor as I have to look at lots of files at a glance to pick and

Many thanks for you reply. I have done all the steps you suggested, but no change,

When I open a folder containing photos, some open correctly but the vast majority open with thumbnails, but they very quickly get overwritten and you can not longer see the thumbnails.

Are there any more suggestions?

  When you say "the thumbnails are just icons", is that on a local account or the Microsoft account?

  Do you have the latest version of ProRes or iTunes installed on the pc?
  

I suggest you to follow the steps below and verify the result.

• 
  Go to file explorer and clock on view.
  
• 
  Select Options and Go to View.
  
• 
  Under Files and folders uncheck the box always show icon, never thumbnails.
  

I also suggest you to install any pending Windows updates on the pc to check if that helps. Updates are additions to software that can help prevent or fix problems, improve how your computer works, or enhance your computing experience.

Hi,

Based on the information you provided, it appears that the thumbnail cache is corrupted. To offer initial troubleshooting, recreate the thumbnail using
Disk Cleanup.

To do this, follow the steps below:

• Launch File Explorer
• On the left-pane, click This PC.
• Right-click on C: drive where Windows 10 is normally installed, and select Properties.
• Click the Disk Cleanup option.
• Check the thumbnail option, and uncheck the rest.
• Click Ok and click Delete Files to complete the task.

In any case the previous steps didn't work, go ahead and try to use the command lines:

• Click on Start.
• Type Command Prompt.
• Right-click the result and click on Run as administrator.
• Type the following command to stop File Explorer and hit
  Enter:
  
  taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
  
  
• Type the following command to delete the thumbnail database files:
  
  del /f /s /q /a %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\thumbcache_*.db
  
  
• Now type the following command to launch File Explorer and hit
  Enter:
  
  start explorer.exe
  
  
• Close command prompt and check the pictures to see if the issue persists.
